Freaking out over insane EFC!

Hi guys…
So I just found out that the EFC I received is 22k… There is no way my family can afford this. Quite simply, the FASFA did not take into account my mom’s student loan debt (85k) and the cost of living in Northern Virginia… They can contribute around 8k a year… My noncustodial parent doesn’t file taxes and has a wife with cancer so he also can not help… I really want to go to UVA, but I don’t know how I am going to afford it… Does the CSS Profile help with understanding these types of things… Thanks.

Does UVA request CSS? If so, then yes, it could help.

Your FAFSA EFC is based on the income and assets of your custodial parent only. If your EFC is $22,000 then your family income is in the $100,000 a year range…is that about right?

UVA uses the Profile as well as the Fafsa in awarding need based aid. This means your non-custodial parent will need to submit the non-custodial parent form. If he is not required to file taxes, he will need to submit a non-filers statement. The schools will want to know how he supports himself…so he will need to provide that information.

In the vast majority of cases, schools will expect families to pay their family contribution.

What are your stats? Perhaps there are places where you could get merit aid to ease the cost burden.

@Fishnlines29 Yes they do.

@thumper1 Yes, that’s about right. My dad has already filled out all his CSS stuff. Is it possible that UVA could expect less than the EFC though? and my stats are 31 ACT, 4.1 GPA, Full IB, top 5% of class…

You can ask the financial aid office for an early read on your aid package. However, in the majority of cases I’ve seen the Profile EFC is higher than the FAFSA EFC. You’ll need to investigate your net price at UVA rather than assuming it will come out better.

In general, schools will give you a break for medical expenses and medical debt. However, student loans are not usually a basis for a financial aid appeal. The CSS also has a cost of living adjustment that is not part of the FAFSA.

My opinion…it isn’t likely that UVA will expect you to contribute less than your FAFSA EFC. But that is my opinion.

The school just doesn’t have deep pockets like, say Yale or Harvard where students with incomes over $180,000 get some need based aid.

But apply and see.

And line up some less costly schools as well where merit aid will bring your costs down to where you can afford them.

@thumper1 I applied to Penn ED, so we’ll see… Thank you!

@AroundHere Thank you for that information. It’s just hard to digest it sometimes…

Before you applied ED to Penn, did you try the NPC?

I did, but the EFC was not this high. I must’ve typed a number wrongly or something… We were expecting an EFC of around 14k

Do the net price calculator for Penn again…it’s still on their website!

Enter everything correctly.

Penn might have generous enough need based aid that your actual family contribution will be lower than the fafsa EFC.

Run the NPC for UVA as well.
