Freaking out over second trimester grades

Hellos guys and thank you in advance!

My school runs on a trimester system, and I just received the interim grades for my second trimester. I missed a lot of school this trimester because of the flu and family issues, so my grades are a little low to say the least. I’ll definitely be trying to get those grades up in the rest of this trimester, but I’m still worried that this would affect my chances. I’ve been a straight As student prior to their trimester just for some context.

P.S. my school send grades typically two weeks after the end of the trimester, and this year I think it would be around the 15th of march, which is before the decision release dates for most of my colleges.

Thank you so much!

Can you get a letter from your doctor to excuse some of the absences or get an extension for some of the work? How low is a little low?

As of now it’s a mixture of Bs and high Cs with two As. But as I make up for the test and quizzes, I should have mainly As and a few Bs. The absences are excused, it’s just that I haven’t had time to catch up yet. Thank you for the response!

No problem, I’ve had some extended absences due to health issues, and I know it can be stressful to catch up. Maybe you could ask your guidance counselor to hold off on sending an update to colleges for a week or so? Although if you have until March you should be able to catch up. Good luck!

Ask your guidance counselor to write a note briefly explaining your situation to send with the report.

Sounds like your grades sent with your application are fine. UNLESS they’re ASKING for those mid-year grades? I honestly wouldn’t worry about them affecting a decision unless you’re “required” to send them. And if they are, then I agree with @happy1 . Just ask your GC to write a note. That should suffice

Do schools typically request 2nd trimester grades? I know RD usually wants first trimester or first semester/2nd quarter. Receiving material in late March seems very late in the process. CMU is the only school I know of that’s traditionally sent decision later than April 1.

Several schools I checked request “mid-year” reports by “mid-February” with “ your most recent grades.” First trimester would be the most recent at that point.

Our school was on trimesters. They did a special calculation for seniors only to come up with midyear grades (one and a half trimesters.)

The only time 2nd trimester grades were shared was when a student ended up on a WL. Those grades were provided as part of the update. They can be very helpful if you keep them or improve.
