Freaking out...since EA is more competitive...(chance, advice, whatever I can get!)

BC is my number one school, and I’m terrified that I’ll be deferred (since only 20% of deferred applicants ultimately get in) or rejected…the reason I applied EA is because it’s my top choice and I don’t think I can wait till the spring for a decision without going insane :)

Here are my stats…chance me for EA please :)

About Me:
-Female, Caucasian, Catholic, IL
-Catholic high school in Chicago suburbs, last year BC accepted 8 of the 12 kids who applied from my school. (Don’t know if they applied EA or RD)
-Applying to the Connell School of Nursing

Academics:
-Weighted GPA over 3 years (excluding senior year): 99.34%; self calculated to be 4.2 weighted average.
-Unweighted GPA over these same 3 years: 3.78
-School does not rank but I know I am in at least the top 10% because of my spot on the highest honor roll (23-25 kids on this, 270-280 kids in my class)
-APs: Calc AB, Bio, English Lit, English Language (4) [Note: the school doesn’t offer nearly as many APs as I’d like it to]
-All honors courses whenever possible with the exception of history

Awards:
NHS, Principal’s Honor Roll (99% and up) sophomore and junior years, High honors (93% and up) freshman year, Italian NHS, Italian Achievement Award (a department award) junior year, published poet

Test Scores:
ACT w/writing Composite 31 (35-28-33-26-10)

Principal ECs:
-Hospital Volunteer (my main activity which I loved, knee injury ended this experience for me, explained in my essay)
-Cancer support organization volunteer (my new activity)
-Italian Club President
-Flute (I play on my own, but I was trained as a child)
-NHS, working on the Induction Committee in the spring
-Park district softball
-At least 130 service hours by the time I graduate

Essays:
I am in love with my essay, as is my best friend who is applying to schools of a higher caliber than I am. It relates my knee injury to my passion in nursing, basically.
I also added a little supplemental essay of my own in the additional info section about why I love Boston and how I would stand out at BC (because BC does not have a supplemental essay of its own).

Thank you so much :)

Uhh… I hope BC is the only college you’re applying to because if you wrote a “supplementary” essay in the additional info box, then that will go to ALL your other schools because you can’t change it once you’ve submitted… I don’t think ND would be too happy reading a supplemental essay about why you love Boston and BC.

But I’d have to say you have pretty good odds at admission.

Yes, I am aware of that. BC is the only school I applied to on the Common App. :)

And thanks for the quick response!

Oh okay that’s good! If it wasn’t your only, you’d be kinda screwed.

haha yeah i got kind of worried when i saw you wrote that in your info of your common app – big dilemma there then.

i think your chances are pretty good
gpa is pretty kick ass -pardon my language- and ACT is pretty awesome too so
hopefully you wrote a great essay? and i hope you get in! i applied EA too and now i see my competition and can see i have good reason to be worried ):

You are not quite correct about the common app. You can make multiple versions of your application and then make changes such as removing the optional essay and then send version 2 to other colleges.

foxy:

Specialized schools like nursing require ECs to support the app. Indeed, ECs and appropriate essays are more critical for specialized programs. I hope you supplemental essay was well written and answered 'Why BC?" bcos “I love Boston” is an extremely poor topic in and of itself. The point is that there are a LOT of colleges in Boston…

Good luck.

ymakrap: Thank you! I hope you get in as well :)

Blue bayou: I’m pretty sure my ECs support my interest in nursing…hospital volunteering, cancer support organization, and my essay is ALL about nursing.
My supplemental essay starts off about Boston but then shifts to why BC. I just wrote it tie the whole application together, which it does.

I think you have a good shot, it seems like your passion for nursing really comes through in your essay/extracurrics, good luck! Thanks for chancing mee

Dear foxysoxy804 : Go back and read your private message from October 6th. Remain confident, keep pursuing and researching your secondary options, and finish your essays and applications for those others schools. Everything you can do for the EA process is now completed. The only proactive measure you can take is in making preparations for other schools options - which you will hopefully not require!

Scottj, you’re always so helpful :)
