Freaking out! Submitted 12:05 am

Hey guys,

I just submitted an application that was due on 01/01 at 12:05 AM which is technically considered 01/02. I am really freaking out. Will they accept the application or not? What happens? How will I know if they actually accepted the application? Should I call the school and explain to them? Will they see the timestamp or just the date?

Omg. Please calm my fears.

If the status changes from "Submitted" to "Downloaded," that means they accepted your application. Pat yourself on the back.

As for the rest of your questions, I can't give you a straight answer. Some colleges are very lenient - they understand that applicants are perfecting their essays to the last minute. Others, particularly top schools, would prefer students that didn't procrastinate.

dude, calm down...u shd be fine.

My son just hit send on the supplement and forgot to send the application until 12:02, so he is freaking out after working so hard on his apps. (He'd sent out others before this but he was working so hard on this one). I think he was just worn out. This whole process is so time-consuming and stressful. I had the payment in right at 11:59 and the confirmation came after 12:00. What a way to spend New Year's day.

I submitted at 12:00, which is 1/02. So I'm calling the schools that didn't work out and explaining what happened.

BUT, I just realized many will still be on vaca, so I'm also sending emails.

P.S. Even if it still doesn't say downloaded they could have accepted your app.

damn i did that too
but for STANFORD
and it was 35 minutes late... but i live in pacific time, and so does stanford
do you think its okay?

Most colleges will allow a slight grace period. Generally, if commonapp.org allowed you to submit the application, it will be accepted and reviewed by the college. Either way, not much point worrying about it tonight.

Geek_mom I trust you a lot, so they accepted the apps; it says 1/02/2009. I'm calling the schools and sending a quick email because most are still on break.

Do you think that's okay?

Wow...I was freeaaaaking out because I thought "Downloaded: 1/02/2009" meant I submitted it on January 2nd. Hehe. So relieved....

I submitted mine at 11:53 but now that I checked the status it say "Downloaded: 1/02/2009". It was not! Should I call up the schools?

iMac: By all means, contact them if you like. They'll probably have somebody in the office tomorrow to answer questions and reassure nervous applicants.

alex and jomur: "Downloaded" means the college has downloaded a copy of your application. That was fast; they must have something automatic set up. If you've gone from "downloaded" to "submitted," then you should be totally good to go.

Everyone: Remember, they want your application. Even the really selective schools want every application they can get. Within reason, they're going to give you the benefit of the doubt. Try to get your apps in before the deadlines (well in advance if possible), but don't freak out if you're 2, 3, 5 minutes late.

Thanks so much, I just wish I wasn't making my mom suffer. She worked up to the last 10 minutes reviewing my essay because I procrastinated so much and now she is just mad I waited so long for something so important and because I waited 12 years to apply.

Ugh.

jeli: geek_son and I had trouble submitting his payment -- the payment Web site didn't like the way our browser was set up. Talk about total freaking out. Happily, we were able to work out the problem and submit the payment later -- well after the application deadline. The Admissions folks had a chuckle over his panicked message, then said hey, no problem. :)

geek_mom, shouldn't it be the other way around?

All of my application statuses eventually changed from "Submitted" to "Downloaded," not the other way around.

Also, the website says the following:

"For each college, you will also see text next to each component of your application. Your status will change from Not Started to Not Submitted to Submitted. After submission, once a school has downloaded or printed your application/supplement, your status will next change to Downloaded; this is an indication that your form is submitted and has started to be processed by the college."

Just making sure!

Hi Julian,
I'm not sure what you mean by "the other way around," because what you quoted sounds to me like what I said. Let me try putting it another way.

Edit: I just re-read my other post, and now I understand what you meant. Yes, I was in error. You go from "submitted" to "downloaded," not from "downloaded" to "submitted." Duh. Sorry. Leaving the rest of this post anyway.

"Not submitted" means you're still working on it.

"Submitted" means you've finished your application and handed it off to commonapp.org, indicating that it's ready for your college to see.

"Downloaded" means the college you submitted it to has received your application from commonapp.org.

So if you've gotten to "Downloaded," that means the college has grabbed a copy of your application (or whatever item is marked "Downloaded") and will be putting it in your file along with your other materials (e.g., test scores, transcripts, recommendation letters sent by mail).

Does this clear things up?

okay....my brown app was submitted at 12.20....it says submitted but not downloaded...
anyone with a simialr situation?
+ does the submitted----> downloaded take seconds or longer?

R-DNA, how soon your app will be downloaded depends on the college. Some of them seem to have automatic processes that download apps right away; others seem to have manual processes for downloading. In geek_son's case, he submitted on a Saturday morning and his app wasn't downloaded until the following Monday.

geek_mom, I fell asleep before I could turn in my Penn application. When my mom woke me up, it was almost 1:00 am and I got everything submitted around 1:30. Do you think that Penn will still accept my application?
