Freaking out!!!!!

I'm 21 years old. No dependents. Not married. Both parents are living. Etc. See where i'm going? But when i filled out my fafsa, somehow i'm an INDEPENDENT student! I don't understand! (even though i'm not complaining) I checked everything atleast 30 times! Is this a mistake on their part? Has this happened to anyone else?

Will it get rejected??!! I need some closure!

My guess is you marked a question that caused the computer to “think” you are an independent rather than dependent. You can check the help guide online, or call…they can help you through this.

G’Luck-a Mum

It seems unlikely you are independent unless you have been in the military or or doing a graduate degree. Check the answers you put for questions 45 to 57. Those are the dependency questions. If you answered yes to one of those it would make you independent. If you did answer yes, make sure the correct answer is actually yes. It is likely your school will verify this.

Did you put down the year you were born wrong?

Go to fafsa.gov. Look at your FAFSA. Look at Student Dependency Status. Did you check Yes for any (such as grad program or in guardianship)? I am betting you did …

Thanks everyone for replying! I spoke to fafsa representative and it was question 54 that was answered incorrectly so i have to make that correction and submit my mothers financial info.

@kelsmom yea i answered the legal guardianship question incorrectly.

You are not alone. That seems to cause confusion … I had a mom who thought for sure she was her son’s legal guardian. I’ve run across quite a few students who didn’t know what a guardian was, but they had seen “parent or guardian” on all their forms to be signed, so they figured it was one & the same. It’s really good that you caught it quickly & fixed it.

I will warn you that sometimes schools will add a requirement for paperwork to prove your guardianship when the FAFSA is received. Because computers are have limited logic, they don’t update themselves when the change is received that says you are not in guardianship. So if you are asked for guardianship papers, don’t ignore the request. Call the school to let them know that you answered that question in error & have since fixed it.

P.S. Make sure you add the parent signature after you add the information.
