Hi I received an email encouraging me to apply for this scholarship/program. On the website there is very little information about it. Does anyone on CC have any more info they’d be willing to share or know how many people apply and how many are accepted? Any statistics?

Only 6 people are selected for the full program. It’s a new scholarship at AU (Just started last year) so there aren’t a lot of statistics concerning the program. However you can receive aid from the program that isn’t full tuition. I applied early decision this year and received about $20000 from the Program.

Do you have to have the competitive requirements to apply? gpa : 3. 46 sat score 1520 act score 21 class rank 11/114, is that good enough? my son has this, should he even attempt to apply?

i also applied for the scholarship. i don’t think they can annouce a further level or finalists of the scholarship until all regular decision kids have applied and are accepted.

I think that the decisions will probably take a little longer…I applied in December and I got an email on the 28th of January saying that they got my application but I accidentally saved it on Preview on Mac instead of Adobe, so they couldn’t read it, but they said just to re-save it and send it again and they’d still consider it. Soo judging by that email it will probably be a bit before they send out notifications.

The email my son received after he submitted his application says:

This e-mail confirms that your application is being reviewed. A campus-wide committee will carefully assess your qualifications for the scholarship. Should there be a suitable match, we will schedule a phone interview with you before the end of February.

So hopefully we’ll hear in the next couple of weeks!

I got the same news as you, kb0671. Wait, so does that mean only those who could possibly be selected will be notified? So those who aren’t picked, might not even be informed then? Quite a limbo. Best of luck everyone.

yea i got my you are not a finalist letter too. I wasn’t really surprised because I haven’t had any hardships and my test scores aren’t perfect or anything, but it was still a bit of a disappointment…oh well!

I’m anxious to hear some news from the program. I didn’t receive a “you are not a finalist” email or anything either, but I also haven’t been contacted for any sort of interview. Curious.

I was just called and was told I got into American, and I had also received the 10k Frederick Douglass scholarship. I had a regular interview with American way back in November but nothing special regarding the scholarship. I think it might just be dependent on grades and scores.

I’m perplexed that people are receiving $10K Frederick Douglass scholarships, partly because the people who are getting them claim not to have applied, and partly because the Frederick Douglass Distinguished Scholars program was supposed to be full tuition/expenses.

I wonder if the $10K scholarshops are separate from the Distinguished Scholars program? Or if AU has done some kind of major overhaul of its merit scholarship approach without telling the applicants.

My son got a $17K Frederick Douglas Scholarship but I do not think this is the same as this Distinguished Scholars Program; he had a 33 ACT and a 3.8 GPA so it doesnt sound as if it is the same thing. When I initially read about the Scholars Program it seemed as if it was targeting minorities and he isnt one. That amount off of $50K still makes the school $10-15K higher than some of the other schools he got into and gave merit.

No, the Frederick Douglass Scholarship and the Frederick Douglass Distinguished Scholars Program are two separate scholarships. FDDS requires a separate application and interviews, while the Frederick Douglass Scholarship is automatically awarded to a student based on merit. A lot of different factors play into the Frederick Douglass Distinguished Scholars Program (besides grades, scores, etc.) and it is not a minority scholarship.

Did anybody hear about beeing selected as a semifinalist for the 2012-2013 freshman? My daughter received a letter two weeks ago telling her that her application was received and is being processed, and will be notified if she’ll qualify as a semifinalist; nothing yet, and I am curious to know if anybody out there got a word. Thanks
