I checked City-data dot com to see what the crime rate was in Fredericksburg, and my jaw dropped. City-data lists the number of crimes of each type, and then normalizes the numbers to a rate per 100,000 population. On the City-data crime index, where higher means more crime and the U.S. average is 320.9, Fredericksburg rated a 370.2 in 2006 and increased to 454.3 in 2007.

As a basis for comparison, I checked Alexandria, where we've had a number of muggings recently--crime index of 214.5 in 2006, decreasing to 196.0 in 2007.

My S will eventually be doing his student teaching in a Fredericksburg high school--should I be concerned?
