I don't think there is any "set" criterion for the free app from Tulane. I think they would welcome your call to see if you can obtain the Personal App (I think that's what they call it). No reason not to. Good luck.

Slorg - my daughter is being deluged with mail from Tulane offering application fee waivers, a no-essay application, and consideration for scholarships (including full tuition) -- with I think a promise of an answer within 3 weeks of applying. She has reasonably good but not great - and certainly not Ivy-quality - SAT & ACT scores. Five years ago, my son - a NM semifinalist - received similar offers from Tulane, but I don't remember the offers continuing this late in the admissions season. So if you want a fee waiver or to be considered for a preferred application, I really would suggest that you email them and ask.

I do think expressing interest is important - my daughter was on their mailing list and attended a local Tulane event in the fall - the mail concerning the preferred applicant status started coming about 2 weeks after she attended that event - and well after many other students had received their notices. Given the hurricane, its hard to know what factors were at play -- but if you are seriously interested in Tulane, it won't hurt to ask.

(Although Tulane was once a top choice for my daughter, she will not apply now -- I think she saw one too many documentary about the failure of the levees for her to want to venture anywhere near New Orleans during hurricane season. )

someone should sticky this thread!

Slorg,
Just contact Tulane. They seem to put anyone who requests information from them or attends one of their information sessions on their "priority" application list. They have also just extended the deadline for "priority" applicants to Jan. 15, so I think if Tulane is of interest, you just email them or call them and say you heard that some people are getting "priority application" offers and you're wondering if you could too.

slorg:

check the tulane website, and go to their discussion weblog -- one of their admission counselors posted the link to the personal app (PA), so it's open to everyone this year. However, I think the PA had the same Nov 15 deadline as EA.

here it is...you can self-register

In addition to the schools that offer free applications through their own sources, check with local sources. I know there's a fund in my area that provides the cost of application fees to a select number of private schools; it's not based on income so much as who submits the proper request forms earliest. They are not small schools, either -- the Ivies top the list, Stanford is included, and most of the prominent private schools in California are on it.

Tulane is heavily recruiting, so I imagine if you asked them they'd waive your fee. They need students badly.

Tulane is only free if you receive thier "Personal Application". I don't know their criteria to do the app, but I guess its worth it to give them a call and ask them to email you the app, if their willing.

Brandeis...free if Blue Ribbon

RPI free for Medalists; and I believe Hartwick was no charge on line??

Rutgers waives the fee for those who visit (they send you a code), Simmons is free for on-line app

Illinois Institute of Technology - free online

Waived Application Fees.
The university will waive the application fee for high school seniors who are National Merit, National Achievement, or National Hispanic finalist or semifinalist, and Maryland Distinguished Scholar finalist, semifinalist or honorable mention recipients. We honor fee waivers granted by The College Board or American College Testing program. Please attach a copy of your fee waiver to the application. If you received any of the awards or fee waivers listed above you are not required to submit an application fee. If we are unable to verify your award or waiver you will be billed.
*Please note, the processing and review of the application will continue without receipt of payment.

Rutgers does...I saw a girl at my camp in the computer lab getting her code(I believe she was from Jersey tons of kids come to my old sleepaway camp from there)

how do you become a preferred applicant for knox?

Several have mentioned that the application for U. of Rochester is free online. Is this still true? I've checked the site, and it seems like the policy has changed.

I took my daughter to a U of Rochester presentation, and after that she got an e-mail containing a survey asking her how she liked it. If she completes the survey, she gets a code entitling her to a free application. So perhaps the policy has changed.

Last year Colby waived the fee for the commonapp but idk if it's a one time thing or not.

Mercer University gives you a application fee waiver if you visit campus. Maybe other colleges do too, since I didn't know this until I got home from visiting and found the waiver in my mailbox.

I think this is a great time for a bump of this thread. Maybe someone with more experience can decide if this thread should be continued or if a new thread should be started for this year.
