I was wondering if anyone has attended "free" college funding seminars. I've seen these ads for these and know that nothing is for free. They claim to be able to find you extra money for school. I think they want you to end up paying for a college financial advisor. Has anyone done this? Was it worth it? Are they a rip-off or legit? My daughter's friend signed up and now she wants my daughter to do it so she can get an "incentive". I'm not sure what to think about it.

I think they’re as legit as those late-night infomercial.

I went to one that our HS sponsored, at my kids’ HS. The company was private and the goal of the presentation was to sign people up for a counseling service that cost money. Some of the night was spent on “selling” this service, albeit in a low key way (no "incentives…that would give me pause). But a lot of the time was spent delivering useful information. On balance, I’d say if you have a couple of hours to kill, why not. Just resist the sales pitch if you don’t nee d the service (and you probably don’t).

However, I didn’t learn anything I didn’t get again from the Princeton “Paying for College without Going Broke” book and the FA forum here on CC.

Thanks for the book tip. I just joined this group and I’m so happy for all the great advice!
