<p>Keep in mind that the <em>average</em> salary throughout the 40s was ~$1,550</p>

<p>Actually, 1950 is an even better illustration. </p>

<p>U Penn tuition was (at least for Arts and Sciences) $500, while the average salary was ~$3,000.</p>
