free internet?

questions:

where will i get free wireless internet signal on campus?
i suppose i cannot get signal in my dorm room, but is there any wireless signal in other parts of dorm buildings?
and how much bandwidth will i get each week for free?

Thank you :)

You’re in kinsolving right? You might get a wireless signal there depending where your room is. Most of the dorms don’t have wireless set up for you, but you can always put a router in your room and use your internet that way. There are wireless signals in different parts of campus, but again, it all depends.

All students get 500 mb for FREE if you’re in a wi-fi spot. Wi-fi spots include: [Public Network: Wireless Access Coverage Map](http://www.utexas.edu/its/network/wireless/coverage/map/index.php)

For the dorm access, the RESNET (the ethernet port in your room), you have to pay (unless you can access the wifi). These are the prices: [Resnet - Options: On-site Signup](http://resnet.utexas.edu/options/onsite.html)

You can not just use the free 500mb. If you live on campus you are required to subscribe to a resnet tier.

My roommate last year never did, and just used the free 500mb each week. The ITS eventually caught on to the fact that he never purchased a Resnet tier, and disabled his access. Every time he connected to the wireless after that (anywhere on campus) he got a message saying he needed to subscribe to a resnet tier, and he was unable to browse the web.

He started using our neighbor’s wireless (neighbor had a wireless router connected to his dorm internet, something not allowed btw) after that happened, instead of buying his own. Then the neighbor moved away about a week before he did, and he was stuck with no internet during finals week. That’s what you get for being cheap.

Whoops had no idea either were not allowed. Definitely had a router my years in the dorms. :/

The rules for routers are ambiguous, some people say a small wired router to hook up an XBox is okay, but others say no routers allowed. I know wireless sharing of your resnet connection is not allowed, but some people have purchased tier iv, and then shared it between roommates. It kinda works, except when the roommate that has pruchased nothing tries to use campus wireless, they can get booted off like my roommate did. I didn’t share with him, he just never bought anything and thought he could get away with it.

Ah, UT does really hate it when we try to save money in any way.

PS OT: but wooo plano, did you graduate from pshs?

Yeah, PSHS class of 09.

God, I’m getting old. Class of '06. Never going back.
