I'm thinking of taking a free period next year. Instead of seven periods I'll only have six. Basically you do nothing or help grade papers depending on which teacher you get. Good idea or no? Do you think it'll affect an application in general?

Honestly, if I don't take the free period, I'll probably just take some random, no-skill/learning-involved class anyway. I'm not an overachiever by any means... but I still want to go somewhere good and I'm not one of those "who cares about school" kids either. I'll be taking two (at most three) APs next year... and maybe one honors.

At my school, we must have 6 free periods in our 6 day schedule (aka averages to one a day) of course I only have 4 but what difference does it make. I would honestly take a thoughtless class where you can socialize (like art maybe). At my school, you have to have study halls senior year and after that you get frees. I couldn't stand study halls because we couldn't talk and at the same time I never could manage to get any work done. I think you'd have more fun in an art class where you can socialize and still get a good grade.

My school is on block scheduling (four courses per semester, then switch to four new classes the next semester), and I decided to take first period off since this is my final semester. Ironically enough, one of the assistant principals stopped me this morning and inquired (interrogated me) as to why I don't have a morning class. My guidance counselor was fine with it, but apparently this certain administrator doesn't like the idea of second semester seniors taking it easy. :(

I have a free period. Well, sort of. I took my "free-period" and turned it into an Independent study class of ancient civilizations, which my school doesn't offer. Maybe try to take that period and devote time to something you're really interested in.

I have a free lunch period. My school divided lunch into two 30 minute sessions with 15 minutes in between. As soon as this week is over, I'll go from having free lunch every other day to free lunch every day.

...Other than that, I don't have any free periods.

I don't have a free period this semester, and trust me; it sucks. If you're an overachiever (:P), then it might be tempting to cram in another class, but you deserve a break! I mean, it's your senior year...
And if you know you're just going to do a random course, I say go for the free. You can actually make it productive if you want.
