free periods

do they exist in other schools? my school has no built in free period or anything, and the general attitude is that if you take a study hall, you are not going to college. is this the case in other schools?

At my first high school we had "enrichment" bascially a free period between 1st and 2nd where we do homework. In my current high school they just added "help class" where we're supposed to get help from teachers but we use it for other things. Im a big time procrastinator so this really helps me

we just have 5th block after school for help, but thats also when clubs meet...im convinced my school just wants to have 3500 kids on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

We have free periods but no scheduled lunch. You eat when you have free or in class, if you have no frees. It's possible to never have frees, which means taking eight straight periods of class. So basically it's up to you if you want to schedule yourself lunch/homework time. It's really nice that we have the freedom to do whatever we choose in our frees.

I have free period twice a day, 40 min each. On Wednsdays and Thursdays, I have 3 frees. However, my school day is from 8:30-5:00 so it makes more sense for me. Also, I'm a senior. Last year I only had one free a day.

That's not the case at my school, however, I personally do not have any free periods. MANY kids at my school have frees, including the val and sal.

Lol, I have a study hall and a free period this upcoming semester, the latter being a period where I don't have to come to school, so school will start at 9 for me...

Seriously? I think that's kind of weird.

Anyway, yeah we have study halls. I've had one every year except 10th grade, in one semester or another. We mostly have them because my school has some required courses that are only one semester (Health, gym, public speaking), so some years you really can't take a class the other semester because there's nothing. So when we come back in January, I'll have no first bell, so I'll just arrive at 8:20.

We have them hypothetically, but I'm taking two extra classes so they don't exist for me :(

I took a study hall this year. Mostly because I couldn't fit AP Pysch/Physics/Bio into my schedule (***) and I already had 6 honors/AP classes. It sucks that we have to take a gym/health class each year and two years of USH in 10th and 11th.

Free period? What are those?

ahaha, nah

My school only allows us juniors and seniors to have study hall.. but if you want to graduate and or go to college... you don't do it. The way graduation credits go, it only allows you to have one semester of a study hall/TA(teachers assistant)/peer helpers (any of them) if you want to graduate on time. Required 22 credits to graduate... (4 english, 3 math and science, 3.5 Social studies, 1 of health and gym. and 7.5 electives, while there is only time to graduate with a max of like 24 or something)

one of my friends leaves school at 10 30 every fourth day. if only my school could be like that...

No free periods in my school. :-/

I'm forced to take a study hall because I have two labs (one for AP Physics, one for AP Chem). -__-;; I wanted to take accounting, but I'm not allowed to leave P.E. twice a week for labs. So my P.E. class is during the period I would've had accounting, and my study hall is during the period I would've had P.E.

Oh, well, it's fine. AP Chem and Physics complement each other quite nicely, so I am okay with simply taking accounting next year.

Yeah same attitude at our school.
The only people taking study hall (no free periods) are the slackers or the unfortunate few who didn't get into the class they wanted and didn't want to get into another class.
The teachers strongly disapprove of study hall because you don't get any credit and most of them recommend taking a blowoff class instead of study hall so you get some credit and still don't have to do very much.
Or you can be TA for a semester or all year. Basically the same as study hall..but you get to choose what teacher you want to do TA for and have a lot more freedom (like you might be able to leave early/ be late to the class if you have a cool teacher)

It's required we have 6 free periods on our 6 day 8 period/day schedule but of course I only have 4. I take 8 classes, one of which meets every other day. The reason we have frees is because non AP classes except for math have to drop at least once every six days.

in my school sophomores automatically get one period free out of our 7 day (6 periods a day) cycle. as a junior, more frees are added since fine arts/music is dropped from the schedule. if you finish foreign language a year early, you get more frees. some religion classes do not meet every day out of the 7 days, so those give more free periods.

some of my friends have 2 frees every day. i have none, due to taking extra classes =[

At my school we have this thing called Zero Hour where you take a class before school starts so you have a free period during the last "technical" period of the school day

We have study halls and individual late arrivals, where you come in a period late.
I took a study hall freshman year because I was worried about the high school workload... worst decision ever. There are SO many classes I want to take now, and if I hadn't had that study hall, I could take most of them.

I'm in Teacher's Aide (Chem teacher) for the whole year. It's a "class" that I wash beakers for 50 minutes (and they seriously do use that many beakers). But it's like a free period if my teacher doesn't have anything for me to do.

My school does have free period that students can just leave campus. But since I don't have a car, there's no reason for me to do it.
