Free Science and Engineering Summer Programs

Hi. I am currently a sophomore in high school. I want to find some good science/engineering summer programs that don't require participation fees (preferably ones that pay for the food/housing/flights).

Thanks

im sorry i was in ur position last year looking for summer science programs. unfortunately i deleted the list that i applied to.

but if it helps ur search there are definitely programs encouraging girls in engineering (try WPI i think)

and idk ur financial staus but i kno u can also get scholarships from programs

There aren't many that will pay for your flight, but there are a few that will pay for housing/foods and such. But the only ones I can think of that aren't RSI are minority oriented.

MITES (for juniors only)
SAMS
CalTech's YESS
RSI (for juniors only)

is MITES for rising juniors or rising seniors?

also is it likely that Asians would be accepted to the minority oriented programs?

apply as a jr, attend as a rising sr.

Asians are not considered as minorities, but may be accepted for other characteristics:

MIT MITES Program

Cornell Nanobiotechnology Internships
Girls on Ice
Clark University Summer Science Program
Texas Tech Clark Scholars
Jackson Laboratory Summer Internships

RPI- PREFACE for rising juniors and seniors and does pay for food, housing and flight.

Cornell's Nanobiotechnology is unbelievable - everything including transportation to and from Ithaca is included. It was an incredible 4 week program.

Some rising senior options not already mentioned include:
Governor School Programs
Baylor Research Program
MIT Women in Technology Program

Another great program that isn't actually free is the Summer Science Program. But it is at a discounted tuition, and I heard the financial aid is godly and often includes airfare.

From the MIT Women in Tech Program website:

"The tuition fee for admitted students is $3,000 which includes books, lab materials, food, and housing for the four-week program. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Financial assistance is available to cover or discount the tuition fee and sometimes reiumburse transportation costs based on your family's financial situation."

Many of the paid programs have FA for needy students, but my post at least is addressing free/close to free programs regardless of need.

ooops I forgot about that one. Sorry!

That's OK, I decided to check it as I had forgotten about that program and couldn't remember if it was scholarship based or not.

They do have another free program:

Center for UltraCold Atoms

However, the catch is that they don't provide housing & food, so you either have to live in the Boston area or figure out some place to stay and a way to get to MIT for the 10 days.

There are quite a few more. Will post when found.

Kat

any other programs? :)

Mahalo everyone for posting these programs. I have a 9th grade daughter who likes math and science. We’ve been looking at this site and there is some great info. I especially like this thread because no matter where the program is it’ll cost me at least an arm (and maybe a leg) to get my child there from Maui. :)

MITES is not only for minorities but gives preference to African, Hispanic, and Native Americans.

I believe Caltech is not having YESS this summer (funding issues). SRAP in Wyoming was another good program (actual paid you to do research, so you could have paid for your flight out of that), but they lost their funding this year as well.

Several Technical Colleges offer them. Look up the GateWay Academy, and Project Lead the Way. They don’t offer overnight stay in my state, but you do get college credit that are transferable to the college of your choice. Also look up S.T.E.M. and check with your school.
