Free Summer Orchestra Programs

It seems like all of these are for college age kids.

I am working with daughter for a summer plan. She has done summer programs in the past. Most recently she loved Cal Sate Summer School for the Arts. Now a junior, I thought it would be best to go to a program associated with a college/conserv she may want to check out for the future while getting to know the faculty. Doesn’t this sound like a good plan? It doesn’t look like many of the universities in Calif have summer programs.

Most on the “free” list are geared to college undergrad/grad age “kids” but there’s a percentage of very serious and dedicated high level hs students as well within the age parameters each allows, and some have been known to bend the rules or require the presence of a parent or guardian if the student is not 18.

There’s got to be some west coast programs in here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/510498-music-festival-master-list.html</a> There’s a few links in there as well that I’ve posted to some of the other “summer” threads.

Using summer experiences is a great way to get specific insight and some time with specific teachers, and they aren’t necessarily at programs at the schools where they teach during the academic year.

Hi everybody,

Great post, and very useful! Thanks to all contributors.

One program that I have really enjoyed is the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. It is open to citizens and non-citizen residents of Canada, including people who are there for university studies. The program includes a chamber music component for most members of the orchestra, and at the end, the orchestra tours through Canada!

It is tuition-free, and everybody receives a $1000 honorarium at the end of the summer. There are also some additional monetary awards - check website for details. Students are responsible for the cost of travel to and from the festival and for meals during the tour.

I participated twice, and absolutely loved it both times! I highly recommend it. If anyone would like further information, feel free to send me a message.

Thanks - I just looked at the website; application deadline was Dec 1 2010; too late for this coming summer plans!

During my search for more free festivals, I found a few more that weren’t on the list. I’m not eligible for any, but hopefully this post will be useful to others!

In addition to age restrictions, these ones also have locality restrictions.

Another free Canadian program (includes tuition, room, and board for all accepted) is the Orford Academy Orchestra which runs July 24th to August 13th this summer. This is the second summer that the academy orchestra is running. Orford has run very good masterclasses for decades. Orford is located south of Montreal a few miles from Mount Orford. The accommodation and food are generally quite good for a summer program.

Adding one at University of Houston my son was just told about for 18-30 year olds with some very good faculty.
