Hey, I'm a junior (international student) who's looking for a research science program/internship.
Preferably science/engineering related.
Are there any free/very low cost/generous financial aided programs out there?

I'm not eligible for RSI (which often comes first in mind)

I'm applying to SSP

I'm looking to apply to a few more programs (since SSP is said to be competitive, I don't want to not be accpeted and do nothing over the summer)

Besides, if I get in a program then call them up saying I wont go, would that be really bad? If it's an university, would it look bad for admissions?
(for example, got accepted to A university's engineering summer program, decided not to go, would it hurt my chances when applying to A university for engineering?)

Hm...not always, especially if you do programming/modeling/math stuff. I did some of my research over email. And by the way, I'd think many professors would know international students tend to be better...

And if you're looking for other less-research oriented options there's always programs like HCSSiM (more math-ish, but a very awesome and prestigious program, $2159 US but financial aid available). It's considered to be on the cheap side since (I think) it's government-sponsored.

Research is always fun.
If you reside on the college's campus, you'll probably have to pay for housing, unless you sleep in the lab (which I have done on occasion...this is actually possible if the lab has a lounge) :) Since you're international, you don't even have to restrict yourself to local schools...if you go for the top schools find a VERY nice professor and emphasize that you actually have some skills even though you're a high-schooler.

And here's more research programs I just found which may be of interest to you: (look at post #117)
