in your time while in CC, did you guys see yourselves with a lot of spare time, possibly a part-time job? or was your schedule normally tight from studying for classes or from a heavy course load (in an attempt to get IGETC and pre-reqs done). what do you guys do in your free time? i've always heard the social aspect of going to a CC sucks the most since friends normally go off to four-year schools.

are you taking igetc or tap and pre-reqs?

<--quarter system

I always read literature and stuff saying that 12 units is considered 'full time,' so i would take two, maybe three classes per quarter and had PLENTY of free time (used playing videogames/browsing net/hanging out), but it wasn't until I took a serious look that I noticed that I wasn't spending my time wisely.
Now I have 18 units and still have much free time to do the above ^_^

It depends on what classes you're taking, but for a normal community college bunch of courses, you can have plenty of free time, even if you're going for a 4.0. It basically comes down to how quickly you can read, and how well you can manage your time. Also, online courses take up a bit less time but require more self motivation.

I'm taking 19 credits, 13 of those are distance courses, and have no trouble with my grades. I'm a big dork, though, I study more maths in my free time.

alansda - when you are at the quarter systems - the 12 (quarter) units still considered full time??

b/c at community college with a semster system full time is 12 semester units so that

when the 12 quarter units is computed to semester units, it's only 8 units....so once we move to quarter units, 12 is still the full time number and not like 14 quarter units (not 18 units? b/c 18 qrt. units = 12 semester units)

It's less units per term, but more terms per year.

Last semester I was taking 21 semester units, all of which were actual lecture courses (not internet) including a lab, and maintained a 4.0. I still had free time, but for some terrible reason the exams for 4 of my classes always seemed to coincide with each other; making for a lot of lost sleep and shutting myself off from the world outside my texts for 3-4 days at a time. Coffee always creates more free time --somehow.

Last Semester I took 18 (semester) units with all engineering-related classes (Math/Physics/Chem, 2 Labs), plus I was working part-time 20h/week and I still had free time. And yeah, I had the same problems with my exams. All of them were usually in the same week. Even all of the finals were on 3 consecutive days. However, I didn't have any loss of sleep and didn't pull any all-nighters, I never had to study more than a 3-4 hours for an exam, because I studied throughout the whole semester and always made summaries of everything. I usually had enough free time on the weekend to go out.

If you...

Go to all lectures and always take notes

Make summaries for every chapter

Do homework as soon as possible

you'll have plenty of free time.

well i'm currently in high school so i'm just trying to see what community college life is typically like. me personally, i am aiming for a 4.0 all the way. ambitious, i know, so i'm just trying to find the best advice possible to help manage my time while keeping me sane at the same time.

Sanity is overrated.

^^^ haha yeah really
