Free Trip to Whitman

I received an email on Friday about an update to my application.

Part of the update says, “After an initial review of your application, the Admission Committee is impressed with your academic and personal accomplishments. If you maintain your current high level of academic performance, you can expect good news from us regarding admission and a merit scholarship to Whitman in late March when official admission decisions are released. While this is not an official offer of admission, we would like to offer something else – a free trip to visit Whitman!” They go on to say that they will fund one free round trip flight to Whitman. Other expenses like food are on me, but I’m from Iowa…and a flight from Omaha to Seattle to Walla Walla…well, that’s not cheap.

Anyways, this was completely unexpected for me. My stats are nowhere near other applicants stats. I have a 31 ACT with a 4.00 GPA at an extremely NON-competitive school. If anything, it had to be my essay that was the hook. I’m definitely going to take Whitman up on their offer and visit the campus. Has anyone else received this paid round-trip visit to Whitman?

My son was flown to campus to spend the weekend and have an interview, he was nominated by his admissions officer for a Garrett Leadership Scholarship. He was there with 10 or 12 other students, all receiving free transportation. Although he wasn’t chosen for the scholarship, he did receive a nice merit award and loved the school, the visit really sealed the deal. Congratulations, they must think you’re a great candidate and want you to experience Whitman ahead of receiving offers from other schools. Go, have fun and take a good look around, my son loved his 4 years there.
