Free Tuition at Cooper Union May Be Near End?

Cooper Union to start charging tuition?

<a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/16/nyregion/cooper-unions-tradition-of-free-tuition-may-be-near-end.html?hpw&_r=0%5B/url%5D">http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/16/nyregion/cooper-unions-tradition-of-free-tuition-may-be-near-end.html?hpw&_r=0</a></p>

How do you think this would affect application?

Cooper may need to loosen admission standards to accept more students. Because if there are more students, then there is more tuition coming in.

Also, because of Cooper’s financial problems, its reputation may decrease within the next few years. Knowledgeable of this, there could also be less applicants…right?

Board of trustees sent message to Cooper community late afternoon yesterday.
Current and incoming 2013 UG students are not going to be charged tuition.
It is reported = confirmed in NYT, DNA NY etc.

However this is the way NYT put it.

–Students, faculty and alumni of the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art eager to learn the fate of the college’s distinctive no-tuition policy have been told to wait, again.
–Dr. Bharucha has already said current undergraduates would be exempt from any future tuition, as will people who are accepted to join the student body this coming fall.

The college had previously indicated that a decision would be announced in March. The statement on Thursday gave no indication as to whether that was still the case.

To: The Cooper Union Community
From: The Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees met on March 6th and agreed that the admission
process for the entering class of 2013 will continue as scheduled for
each of the three Schools. All students entering in the fall of 2013
will be admitted on a full-tuition scholarship basis, as previously
stated.

For anyone who wants to understand more about the financial crisis, watch this and all parts of it.

Board of Trustees made the announcement this afternoon.

Most media is also reporting on the story.

The Cooper Union will reduce the scholarship amount by 50% for those freshmen entering the schools in the fall of 2014. (It is reported that the scholarship is valued at $38,500 / year, making Cooper Tuition a baseline of ~$20,000 / year before financial aid, room and board, and books.

Reports are there will be financial aid for those who qualify… I imagine there will be a sliding scale for aid, based on your ability to pay, although the school admits they still need to work out the details on how to calculate that formula.

Confirmed: news reports CU will start giving all students 50% scholarship. The balance of about $20,000 will be addresed by the student and if s/he qualifies for aid. This will affect the profile and range of accepted students starting next fall.

It was either that or run the risk of CU closing it’s doors.
