German universities will consider you for admission if you have a US high school diploma with a 3.0 GPA and meet one of the following four criteria:

(a) 1,300 SAT (verbal + math) or 29 ACT

(b) AP scores of at least 3 on four “year-long” AP exams: calculus AB or BC, one science, one language, one social science or humanities. Two semester-long APs (e.g. Micro and Macro Economics) can be counted as one year-long AP.

© 1 year of community college and 1,150 on the SAT / 25 ACT

(d) 2 years of community college

If you don’t meet one of these criteria, universities may offer you to take a placement exam for a Studienkolleg. That’s a year-long pre-university program for foreign students who don’t quite qualify for direct entrance to a German university. Free to attend as well.
