Does freedom require eliminating restraints on behavior, or does it require creating or strengthening certain restraints?

Freedom can only be attained with the increasing level of restraints. Examples from literature and history clearly illustrate this. Jane Eyre in Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte seeks her freedom by detaching herself from her mundane living; the Revolution War, devastating as it can be, helped Americans win their independence; Dimsdale in The Scarlet letter also shows without an effort to free himself from his own guilt, he will be forever trapped in his own secret.

Jane Eyre is a good example of how people can enjoy freedom after going through all the hardship of life. Jane Eyre was born an orphan who had to seek shelter in her aunt’s house where she was never accepted and even restricted in many ways. Since she was not a submissive child, she decided to leave the house of her only relatives for a strange place like Lowood School. At least in Lowood school, she could be friends with some pleasant people like Helen and Miss Temple; at least in here, she could be educated in a proper way. However, after eight years, Jane felt bored with the repetitive schedule and her mundane life, she decided to leave school and became a governess in Thorn Field, in which she met Mr Rochester, a gentleman and felt in love with him. Had Jane Eyre submissively stayed with Mrs Reed and her children, had she accepted an easy life in Lowood school, she could never enjoyed her education and found the love of her life who was equal to her both intellectually and emotionally.

The Revolutional War was another example of freedom as a result of increasing restraints. Before the Revolution War, America was under the goverment of Britain which was in need of money to cover their war expenses. British government then taxed heavily all kinds of products exported to America, which weakened the colony’s economy. As a result, the angry Americans decided to upthrow the government, starting with the Boston Tea Party event. The struggle, though leading to a heavy human and property cost, helped Americans win its independence from Britain.

Dimsdale in The Scarlet letter also illustrates how eliminating restraint or behavior may result in greater restraint and confinement . Dimsdale had a secret affair with Hester Prinne, and had a baby with her; however, in contrast to Hester who overtly confessed her sin, Hester kept his secret unknown. Though he was admired by the people in his community, when he was alone, he could not help feeling guilty. His guilt was even carved on his heart and prisoned his soul. Obviously, he could never be set free if he did not tell the truth about his wrongdoing.

The examples of Jane Eyre, Dimsdale and the Revolutionl war have shown freedom cannot be achieved without a level of effort to overcome hardship. Restraints only make us stronger physically, intellectually and psychologically, and set our heart at ease.
