I’ve just been notified that I was selected as a finalist for the Freeman Asian Scholarship in South Korea, which I’m assuming is one of the more cutthroat countries.
I know that the scholarship is extremely competitive, and thus I’m not getting my hopes too high.
What I do want to, though, is whether how likely it is that I’ll be accepted regularly to the university (no financial aid, full pay) if I don’t make the cut for the scholarship. My Freeman Addendum essay, which I’m guessing was a big boost for me, was one of the best supplements I’ve written - will that not be considered anymore in the regular international pool? Does anyone know if my application will get handed to a completely different group of admissions officers?
If they are seriously considering to let me attend Wes with a full tuition scholarship, is it pretty much a given that they will let me attend for 66k/year? Has there been any precedent of people being selected as a Freeman finalist without getting into the school itself…?
Sorry - I’m a bit jumpy/anxious after getting the notification out of the blue. If anyone could help me out, that would be very much appreciated.
@korboy , hi there! Im also a finalist from Indonesia . First of all good luck for both of us! I may not be the one to answer you all the question but let me ask you… Did you pay your application fee? If you paid then you should also be considered for the regular application pool… If you used a fee waiver like I did, then it’s all-or-nothing… get the scholarship, or puff nothing at all.
"It is likely that some highly qualified applicants who would otherwise be admissible to Wesleyan will not be chosen for the highly selective Freeman Asian Scholarship. No financial aid is available to such students, but those who do not require financial assistance to attend are encouraged to apply as “regular” applicants to Wesleyan University. To be considered as a “regular” (non-aided) admission candidate in the event that you are not selected as a Freeman Scholar, please indicate your interest on the Freeman Scholarship Addendum.
There is no application fee for students applying only for the Freeman Asian Scholarship, but candidates also wishing to be considered as a “regular” candidate must submit the $55 application fee. Dual Freeman Asian Scholarship/“Regular” admission candidates must submit a Certification of Finances form documenting that the family has sufficient resources to fund the entire cost of education, approximately $65,000 in the first year and estimating a 5% increase in each subsequent year."
That’s from the Wesleyan site.
And again good luck!
@indonesianboy Yes, I have paid the application fee, and my family can fund the entire cost if necessary. As stated in the original post, I am well aware I will be considered for the regular applicant pool if not selected for the scholarship - My question is simply asking how likely Freeman finalists are to be accepted to the university through that process.
Well too bad then @korboy. I don’t know and I have no friends who can answer you too… all of my former seniors in high school also did the same like me - use the fee waiver, do the make or bust scene… some successful and some not
Good luck to both of you. My son will be attending this fall, He just loves Wesleyan University after his visit in September. As a Freeman finalist, I would say you chances are high.
