My school offers Spanish, French, and Chinese. I've taken 2 years of Spanish and will finish taking 2 years of French my Junior year. If I'm able to fit another year of language into my schedule senior year, should I take French 3 or Chinese 1? Which would be more beneficial for college? If I were to take a year of Chinese, I would have been through the Spanish, French, and Chinese languages. Would that look good for college or is it better to just focus on French? I enjoy French, but I think Chinese would be fun to learn.

You won’t learn anything in one year. Take French.

^Yup. French will be more helpful in the long run. I don’t think you’d learn enough Chinese for you to be able to use it. Chinese doesn’t use an alphabet so it’s a ton of characters to memorize. I think it’s 5000 to be able to read an article. I’ve been studying my Chinese and I can onlylearn about 300 a year.

Colleges like to see three years of a foreign language, so I also third French.

I’d go for French. Chinese is super difficult, so I agree with the others that you probably wouldn’t learn much more than really simple basics, and you wouldn’t have much time to use it. I’ve also repeatedly heard that colleges love seeing three years of a foreign language.

Take Chinese. It’s something different and it look fun to learn. Everyone takes Spanish and French. I wish my school offered Chinese or something other than Spanish and French. Because Chinese is so difficult, I think it’ll look better.

Take French. If you were a freshman then I would recommend Chinese. Since you are almost done with high school that one year of Chinese won’t do much. Just continue your french studies.

Thanks for the help everyone! I’ll continue with French if I can fit it in my schedule!
