So I’m a rising sophomore and I want to start a club at my high school. I’ve heard the claim that founding a club is only used to try and “pad” your application, but, as silly as it seems, I feel like there’s a real need for a French club at my school. Out of the 1100+ students attending my school, only 2 took French IV. I feel like if I start a French club and attempt to “revitalize” the French program, maybe more than 2 kids will take French IV next year. Am I wasting my time? Would this actually benefit my school and I? Or would schools just think I’m a mindless zombie who’s only goal is the acceptance letter…
Do a lot of people at your school take French? Would those students be enthused about a French club? What would you do in there? If your French teacher (or a sponsor familiar with French) and principal are down then why not :). If it works then it would definitely benefit your school. I think if adcoms see it then it will show that you’re an ambitious student and that you’re confident in your French skills ;). It might be more attractive to students and college apps if you found French Honor Society instead (info [here and here”>Société Honoraire de Français - AATF]here](Induction Fee for 1st-year SHF Members - AATF)).
Thank you so much! @pinklinks
Talk to the French teacher. I’m sure s/he would be enthusiastic about it. But before you bring your plan to the teacher and the principal, you need to know
1° who you’d recruit
2° how you’d attract them
3° what you’d do there - projects, volunteering with West African immigrant community, partnership with cafeteria for special lunch on specific days, decorations, films, “Plus belle la vie”/soap watch and discuss, forum comments, conversation (topics?), book club (what books? = Le Petit Nicolas is good, because it’s fun and easy + there are 2 films. Kiffe Kiffe demain is a popular choice too), act out acts in a play, bringing topics to School Board, organizing a trip…
4° whether you’d met once a week or twice a month or every other day…
5° what measurable impact would you expect
6° what budget would be needed
7° what resources already exist (<- ask French teacher/s)
8° could the French speaking exchange students be convinced to help?
Look for French teachers’ clubs/facebook pages for ideas of projects.
Very helpful, thank you @MYOS1634
