Hey, everyone. It's Michael again. I only received one response to my first thread, so I'm creating another thread to try and get some more input on my situation. In case you didn't see the first one, I'm interested in pursuing majors in French horn performance and jazz piano performance, but I can't decide which one to major in, nor do I believe I can double major in both categories. Also, I don't want to give up playing either instrument. Do any of you have a solution to my predicament? Thanks!

C’mon people, don’t be shy!

Do you prefer classical music or jazz?
Which instrument are you better on?
There are colleges which let you take lessons on a secondary instrument - Oberlin for one.

JPMichaelG, I think no one’s responding because there’s no real answer to your question. Certainly you can continue to play both jazz piano and French horn, but if you’re serious about pursuaing a career in music performance, I think you’re going to have to pick one in order to be able to devote enough time to it to have a shot at getting good enough to make a living at it. My son tried to keep up with classical piano as well as jazz piano through high school, but ultimately trying to do both was hurting his ability to get to the level he wanted to get to in either and he decided to focus on the jazz side. And that was the same instrument! As to which you should choose, that’s a decision only you can make. Which speaks to you more? For which do you have the greatest passion? Which one can you not imagine living without?

Piano, you’ll get more work, especially if you’re a strong reader.

The biggest thing with my situation is (as I stated in the OP) I don’t want to give up either one. Also, I’m afraid if I choose one over the other, I won’t have time to focus on the other. What would be the best solution in this case?

So play horn in the orchestra to keep your chops. It’s unlikely, if you go to a reputable music school, that you’ll be able to prepare appropriate required recital material for both instruments. You have to choose one to focus on.
