French IV same as 4 years of french

Is taking up through French IV the same as taking "4 years of a foreign language"? I completed French IV during junior year and now wish to replace French V with AP Calc BC for senior year. My reasoning is that I want to go into science, and I think AP Calc BC might help more than French and just AP Calc AB. Is this a smart choice? I don't want to switch if it would hinder me.

Please let me know. Thanks!

It counts as one year.

Did you take four years of HS French. In our HS honors 8th grade language counts as a HS class and goes on the HS transcript so if that is the case for you, then you may be fine. not, then I’d maybe take the fourth year in HS Talk to your guidance counselor to be certain how it works at your HS. You can also check to see what colleges you are interested in are looking for (many colleges are fine with 3 years of a foreign language).

Actually, for the vast majority of colleges, when they say 3-4 years of the same language, they mean reaching the 3rd or 4th level. They do not care how you do it, whether middle school, summer school, etc.

That said, to the OP, why is it an either/or? Are you planning on doubling up on another subject?

Depending on your college, you may have a foreign language requirement to graduate, so you might want to consider taking the SAT Subject test or the AP test to potentially place out.

You don’t need to take anymore foreign language. They mean level 3-4, not years, as ski said above.

Thank you! That is a relief.

Yes, the school usually count level you have reached rather than the number of years.
