French MA and DML at Middlebury

I've applied to 3 grad schools for MA in French, but Middlebury is the dream. The other two are offering TAships (so, no tuition) and then there's Middlbury. I haven't heard about financial aid yet, but I have to make a decision soon. It would definitely be the 1 summer in Vermont + year in Paris. They said aid for Paris is very unlikely.

Anyone out there want to talk me in to going into much more debt for Middlebury? :) Any general comments about classes and experiences with Midd in Paris?

Also, does anyone have opinions on the DML? My third language is far from graduate level, so I'm hoping I can get that up to par so I can consider the DML.

Thanks for any ideas or feedback!

Have to say that I would go for “free” for your degree. In the current economy, no debt gives you more options in the fututre than the Midd MA. Just my opinion-and I’d like to know the other 2 schools…

It all depends on what you’re looking for. I just finished a Masters at Middlebury (although not in French). For me, it was important to get a degree in a year and spend an academic year abroad. Also, the Language Pledge is fantastic (if you’re good about following it!). I don’t regret my experience, although I’ll be paying back my loans for a long time.

Also, are you planning to apply to Ph.D. programs? I don’t know what other schools you’re looking at, but the Middlebury programs are very highly regarded, so that’s another thing to keep in mind.

Thanks for the replies so far. I live in Indiana so I applied to IU and Purdue as well. However, neither are close enough for me to commute. IU has a very reputable program but it just doesn’t seem like a good fit. I liked Purdue when I visited but I really like the class options and the location (Paris  ) with Middlebury. I did just receive my award letter from Midd, and I’m getting a good amount of aid for the summer, but nothing for the year since I guess I didn’t get in my application fast enough (although I talked with them and they said I would get less than 50% of it covered if I waited until next year, which is not an option because I don’t want to wait). I am planning to go on to PhD, perhaps at Purdue even if I do the MA at Midd. I would LOVE to be able to do the DML, but again, my German is not close to being at a graduate level (yet).

Hi! I graduated with a MA in French from Middlebury and highly recommend doing the year abroad in Paris. I learned so much at the Sorbonne and living in Paris; not only that, the research potential for your thesis is unbelievable in Paris. I’ve been recently accepted to the DML program at Middlebury in French and Spanish and will be in Paris myself this fall with Middlebury and this summer in Vermont for the 6-week program. It was incredibly difficult to get into the DML program (you have to be doctoral level in the second language by passing the placement test) but hoping it will be worth the effort. I met a teacher at the Sorbonne while in Paris for my MA who is going to be instrumental in my disseration research; so, I certainly believe in doing the year abroad. I see that you posted over a month ago; hope that’s the choice you made  Please let me know if you have questions and maybe I’ll see you this summer!
