Hi everyone,
I have always loved taking French and it has always been one of my favorite subjects. I would love to double major in chemistry and french, although, maintaining a high gpa with this course load may become difficult. Should I major in chemistry because of the relevance to pre-med?
Or should I major in French because it is something different, or would it be frowned upon?
Would a lower gpa matter if the board saw my double major?

It doesn’t make a difference if you double major, but GPA is important. major in what you love. No adcom is going to cut you slack for either major. If you can fit your pre-reqs in with a French major, then do it. One thing to consider, however, is how study abroad would affect your timeline. You would not want to take any of your prereqs abroad. If you are content with a gap year or content with a shorter study abroad then it can work.

Med schools are NOT going to give you a pass for having a lower GPA because of a double major…that is why doing a double major is very risky.

GPA is everything!

Since you like “taking French” then I suggest taking a few classes in the subject for fun…or doing that as your only major.

Please be aware that majoring in a FL is not the same as becoming more fluent. That is often surprising to those who really enjoy learning a particular language, but then find that a major/minor in that FL means taking (in your case) French Literature and French History, which may not be as interesting.

My son loves Spanish, but knew that no way would he like the Spanish Lit and history classes that a major/minor would require…so he just took the FL placement exam, got placed at the 3XX level, took Conversational Spanish, Medical Spanish, and Business Spanish which added to his fluency.
