French nationals at McGill

My son just decided that he will do his undergrad at McGill, in science. We are very pleased. He is a French national (also has US, Irish and British nationalities), so gets special deal with Quebec, though it is only the Canadian nationals tuition rate and not the Quebecois rate we expected (7.2K Canadian $ instead of 3K). Still, it is a phenomenal deal when you look at comparable prices in the US.

He applied after we visited. We walked into a prof’s office (a biologist) who was happy to talk with us. My son was seriously inspired.

Any other French nationals out there going to McGill? Of course, I’d love to hear from others regarding their experiences, we are anglophones.

He is a French national Anglophone?

Lots of French nationals go to McGill. Check out the clubs as one is likely to be related to France.

@57special. We moved to France from the US, his mother is Irish and British. As he was born here and lived more than 10 years in France, he was eligible, and we knew it carried a good tuition deal at McGill, so we did the paperwork.

Ah, I see. Unusual, but you should get a killer deal on tuition, as I think you’ll qualify as a Quebec national. My youngest, who is Canadian but has never lived in Canada, will also qualify as a Quebec national should he go to school there.

I think the tuition for McGill for a Quebec native is something absurd like 3K USD.

@57special The OP’s son is not a Canadian citizen so that loophole is irrelevant.

Ah, I thought “here” referred to Quebec. Should have read then OP more closely. My bad. Still a great deal at a great school.

@57special and @TomSrOfBoston , the law has changed. A French national now gets the regular tuition for all Canadians in Quebec. So Tuition for my son will be 7.2K C$, which is less than other international students.

@alcibade We were referring to a loophole in which a Canadian citizen who has never lived in Canada receives Quebec tuition rates. This does not apply to your situation.

@TomSrOfBoston , very interesting. (We used to live in Concord, MA.) What is your situation?
