French or Swedish: My New Language?

I want to learn a new language and I have narrowed my options down to French and Swedish. I can just as easily pick up vocab in both of these languages, but I think it would definitely be easier to learn (simple) grammar in French. I am aiming to first be able to read and listen in the language; I will move on to writing when these are finished. Still, I am stuck between these two languages and can't choose. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to learn first.

DON’T DO SWEDISH IT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO SPEAK

Seriously. It’s really hard. I’m taking Norwegian which is mutually intelligible and it’s so hard compared to French which I have also taken. In my opinion, French is easier for English speakers.

Do Frenchhh. Such a good language.

But you gotta practice the writing early, otherwise it’ll be hard to get.

Listen to him^. His French skillz got him a girlfriend.

^Truth. It helps that she speaks it too, though.

French will be easier, but speaking Swedish is cooler. :D

Take French. Its easy to speak, write and comprehend. And plus French sounds way better than Swedish.

But that may just be my personal opinion since I’ve been studying French for 5 yrs now 

I adore French and it is easier, but Swedish will look better on college apps.

Actually French and Swedish will look the same on college apps since both languages arent commonly spoken

^French is very commonly spoken, if you take a global perspective. Buut…yeah, it pales against Spanish in the US.

Go with French.

^^Sure, French is much less commonly spoken than Spanish, but considering that there is a French AP and there has never been a Swedish AP and probably only Swedish high schools offer Swedish, I’d say Swedish would look a lot more interesting.

How would Esperanto look on a college app? I am fairly capable at the language and will most likely be fluent/proficient by the time I apply to colleges

^I tried teaching Esperanto to myself in 4th grade. Tried again for like three days last year. I think it’d look pretty sweet.

Saluton! Mi pensas, ke Esperanto estos tre impresa!

Oh wow, other Esperantoj. Here I thought this was a dead language amongst high schoolers. I’ve tried several times teaching myself; the problem I have is that I’m also taking French AND trying to teach myself a little rudimentary Arabic to prep for my major. Damn that language is hard.

Personally I’d go with French. It’s more useful, and you’ve said that the grammar is generally easier, so it seems like a win-win to me.

Does that mean “I think Esperanto will be very impressive”? (Or something along those lines…)

Yep! As in it will be impressive on your application (though I wasn’t sure how to say the last part–I’m definitely not fluent).

Hard for it to be a dead language when it’s hardly living :stuck_out_tongue: (When I think dead language, I think it was once alive, then it died).
