French Placement Exam

I'll be starting college as a freshman this fall and would like to place out of the language requirement, but I need to brush up on my French before I can confidently take the test. Can any current students give me a general idea of the test format, what level students are expected to be at, and maybe point to an online resource which might have past papers?

I was told that it's multiple choice and could be similar to SAT II standards.

I've emailed Madame Agnes who is listed as the course instructor for French, but no reply from her yet.

Thanks for all your help.

same with spanish, anyone?

might as well add latin to the list of questions, anyone?

and german, while we're at it...

Bump, and re-hijack.

Anyone have any idea? Or any of their friends placed out of the language requirement?

when are such tests taken?

I'm currently a Junior so I will try to remember the format of the test but I may not be 100% accurate-

I do know that the tests are administered during orientation- there is a full morning devoted to them and I don't think the test is more than an hour. I remember it just consisting of multiple choice grammar questions and then short answer/essay type questions to show some writing skills. I know that if you end up getting recommended for a certain level but feel that you should be in a higher level it is not too difficult to move up- teachers are usually understanding especially if you can demonstrate your language ability and have taken the necessary classes in hs.

Just to put things in perspective I took AP French in hs and ended up being recommended for French 3. I was borderline French 4 but I decided to just take French 3 to brush up on my grammar- it really is up to the individual.

Hi gojumbos,

Thanks for the info. The reply I got from the French Dept is that it a multiple-choice test that is administered by computer.

How long did it take you to complete the language requirement if you started at French 3? I'm assuming its one class per semester, so to complete French 22 you took 2 years?
