Does anyone know how the French placement exam is? How long is it, and how difficult? How does it compare to the AP French Exam?

well, anyone who took the AP french exam hopefully didn't have to take the placement exam ;)
anyways here's my take on it- i took french 4 as a junior, thus had no practice for a year. "studied" about 10 mins the night before (at that point, just don't bother lol)
you have from 8-10 am to take the test and can leave when you've finished. i found it hard because of the year off, but had i been in french this year i would easily have tested into level 4. as it was i managed level 3.
the test is all multiple choice and is heavy on the grammar (masculine/feminine, verb tenses, etc) along with some listening comprehension and reading comprehension. not that bad if you're well studied (unlike me) or were in french as a senior.
don't forget your pencil, or you get one of those short ones without erasers.
oh, and finding the room: go in covel commons door, go up the funky spiral staircase, and it's in the big room with the double doors. not down a hallway. i had trouble finding it lol.
good luck, hope this answers all your questions, and enjoy orientation!

yeah...dont do like i did and get lost and miss the test, that will definitely make it easier.

Does the test use a lot of passe simple, or does it expect you to know how to use it and conjugate verbs in that form? Also, how many questions is the test?

sigh, why do french people always have it hard? :[ i find it so unfair that our test is 2 hrs long

passe simple... well you see my main problem is that i forgot pretty much all the tenses. aside from present, past, and a few random ones. so i can't really answer that lol.
there were (now don't freak out okay?) over 100 mc questions. 90ish grammar and the rest are reading or listening comprehension.
if you don't have a bunch of nurses outside the window loudly protesting for better health care, you'll be better off than i was already!!!

when's the next scheduled french exam AFTER orientation?

I purposely skipped it during orientation because I plan to take a new language anyway. But now I just want the opt out of the language requirement just in case my schedule gets too packed for language classes...

i'm sure that it'll be offered sometime in september...
