French placement

how does french placement work?

what sat ii scores/ap scores correspond with the different french classes at brown?

just wondering what french ill be in. im studying a bit over the summer so if im not in a high enough class i can take the placemet test in sept.

AP scores

There’s also a placement exam in the Language Lab on the 2nd floor of the CIT during orientation; it’s done on a computer so no appointment is necessary. You take the exam, it gives you a recommended placement. So long as your AP score placed you at least that high, you’d be able to take any course to that level - you’d need to talk with a professor to place higher.

what about sat ii scores?

That’s from the French department website.

My D took the SAT II in Fr w/listening and scored high enough on that and on the Brown placement test to place into a more advanced course than she actually took. I think that was a good plan; she is not concentrating in French, and really didn’t want to be too accelerated right away. If she really wanted to take a lot of French, then she would have gone into the higher level, but she was concerned about taking a class that was too intense during the first semester.

I would definitely advise taking, or at least shopping, a level below where you were placed. I had only taken French for a summer before freshman year (101 and 102 at a local community college), but I wound up being placed in FREN0400. It was a struggle for me, but I got through it, and am now considering French as a concentration.

For those of you looking for some review, the French department’s website has an excellent resource for quick excercises: [ELFE Index](<a href=“French and Francophone Studies | Brown University”>French and Francophone Studies | Brown University)

I’m personally using it to fill in the holes.
