Ha, I've noticed a trend here on CC concerning the French SAT II, with native speakers getting "abysmal" scores (750, for instance). :D Although I did see a 790 from a non-native on here (well done!). But then again, the percentile of French SAT II takers is 83% for a 760...what do you think? Who's getting the 800s?

Really! I’m curious to know what is considered to be a good score for French SATII.

It is still safe to assume that native speakers are predominantly the ones who receive the highest scores.

It really depends on what a student’s individual goals are. A 620 is considered average, while a 740 is one standard deviation above the mean.

mifune, in this pdf table, for example, french: 790 corresponds to 88, which means if I get 790, i’m only in 88 percentile? Even worse, for Chinese, if I get 780, I’ll be in 40 percentile?? Did I misunderstand the table?

I’m a native speaker and cannot believe 760 was 83 percentile.
Who IS getting these 800’s anyways? It’s bugging me…

This whole FL business is so depressing…

That’s the odd part…none of the CC native speakers are getting 800s! Is there someone more focused on over-achievement than the CC kids? :O

No, you are understanding it correctly. Percentiles differ between individual tests, of course, due to scoring curves and varying degrees of difficulty.

However, that table is outdated… from 2005!

Outdated or not… If they update it, the situation might be even more depressing…
Anyway, can someone advice me - my estimate is, by the time I take the test, at best my Chinese could be about 40 some %, or if I take French, it might be 70 some %. For what I want to do in college (jounalism, international relations, or…) I was suggested to take a FL SATII, together with lit. and history. I know there’s no way I can get upto 90%in any FL, I simply can’t compete with native speakers. Should I forget about it, or should I take it, just show the colleges my best? btw, I do want to try some very good schools. Thanks for any thought.

Even so, the SAT II tests are standardized examinations, so any discrepancy is not significant.
I would recommend taking the three that you feel represent your knowledge best. The only exception is that some universities prefer specific tests if you are applying for a particular major/program or require submission of tests within particular subjects (i.e. MIT, which requires one math and one science test).

And unless you’re going to apply for languages/a language is required, or you are very talented in a certain one of them, I wouldn’t suggest taking a language SAT II too strongly.
