I'm fluent in French (lived in Switzerland for 14 years) and I was wondering if I should take the French SAT subject test. Do colleges generally disapprove of people doing this? Do they think I'm taking it for an easy high score, or do they consider it a bit like "proof" that I actually know my French?

People do this all the time, is the sad thing. Really, you should either learn another language (probably too late at this point) or just not bother taking the test, especially if you plan on listing that you’re fluent in french somewhere on your app. There’s a better way to spend $9

A lot of my friends who are fluent in Chinese take the SAT II Chinese, but the situation’s pretty different…because so many native speakers take it, getting one wrong gets you a 740 or something ridiculous like that. I don’t know if colleges look down on taking a native language SAT II, but if you don’t get a really good score on the test, it’ll reflect quite badly on you.

I thought so. At least I took 5 years of Latin so in case I can just take that test. Thanks for your answers :)

the Latin SATII is much harder than the French SATII…

I would just take both Latin and French if I were you

I’m a native Korean speaker and would have pulled an 800 for sure if I chose to take the test… but I decided to go for French instead and got an abysmal score. It’s not one of my top 3 scores anyway, but now I’m wondering if I should have just gone for Korean anyway.

Standard, why do you think colleges know you lived in a french speaking country for 14 yrs? if your english is good then i think you should send in your french satII. you may want to show them your english is good also, by taking a lit. sat.

I’m Korean, but I was born in the US and my main language is English (though the first language I learned was Korean). Should I take the SAT II Korean or would they not care what I get on it? (I’m not the best at Korean but from what I’ve seen from practice tests it looks like a joke to me…)

you should probably take it to demonstrate your fluency, especially if you can speak German/Italian also. a row of 800’s in different languages is pretty impressive in the eyes of the adcom.

I got at least 2 wrong on the Chinese w/ listening and still got 800. The harsh curve is a misconception. Everyone who took the test at my school scored 800 (although… my school is located in China XD)

what the … so chinese sat ii must be like a joke to your schoolmates. i know they test extremely basic stuff but for someone who doesn’t speak chinese and learns it as a foreign language, it is so hard.

language sat2s aren’t used in admissions
