French Students in USA

Hello !

I am a French student and I would like to study in the USA. I was wondering what are the high school average or the baccalaureate results of students who have been admitted in liberal arts college such as Oberlin, Harvey Mudd or Occidental College. And (if I dare...) students who have been admitted in Ivy League Universities ?

Are the universities or the college more tolerant towards international applicants concerning SAT results (pondering that we not necessarily study the same things as American students) ?

Thank you very much for you answers !!! I am feeling a little panicked concerning my college applications... :D

Hey!
I know it’s a 3 years old message…
But here I am now in your place, and I wish you could tell me what was your average and where were you accepted? and if you have more information about averages accepted please tell me
Thank you :)

Bassplayer08 doesn’t frequent this forum anymore. If you want to talk to him, you could try an email or private message.

@SaraHakim I am a student with a French background too! I am kinda confused with these gpa, I don’t understand how they are calculated.
Anyway… I guess Bassplayer08’s answer will remain mysterious ;)

Hey guys, I am Moroccan and I studied in a french high school in Casablanca, Lycee Lyautey maybe you know it (largest french high school abroad). I am currently studying at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor which is one of the best universities in the world (ranked 14th devant polytechnique, centrale etc…). I did not care that much about the Baccalaureat since I got my admission decision several months before it. I studied 5 days before and still got a 14.6/20 mention bien !
I was in section ES, took the SAT once in January before the application…got a 1620/2400 and took the Toefl the same week and got a 93/120. I explained that we are not familiar with the SAT etc, I believe they were understanding. I had an overall average of 14-15 in premiere et terminale, which is really hard to get in ES especially in my high school known for its competitivity but always did well in math (15-18). Hope it is helpful !

My son is attending French High School in Tunis. He is in Section ES. He is ranked number one in Math, Physics and Science. He has an average of 16.5 now. But he just took SAT, and only had 670 in math, 450 in reading, 420 in writing. He would like attend University of Texas and study Petroleum Engineering. What do think his chances are?

Hey!

I am also a French student in the US.
I’m currently a freshman at the University of Southern California (USC: ranked 22nd of the country in 2013) majoring in Business Administration and Law.

When I applied, I got accepted by 10 of the 14 schools I applied to (rejected by Georgetown, UC Berkeley, UCLA and waitlisted by Boston College, but accepted to USC, Boston University, Northeastern, Babson College, University of Miami, The George Washington University, LMU, American University, University of Richmond and Bentley University).

My GPA was about 3.7 and I was ranked 3rd out of 38 of my ES class. I was in a very strict and well ranked high school in Paris and my average was around 14/20.

My SATs were definitely not excellent (1810 => Math:680, Reading:520, Writing:600), but I had good TOEFL (100/120) and SAT subject tests (Italian:750 & Spanish:680) scores :)

I really think that what made me stand out were my essays which were STONG, my curiosity, the fact that I came to visit the universities I liked most, and my love of languages (I speak 4 languages and wanna learn more).

I also play football (or soccer for Americans), golf and tennis, but nothing at a real competition level.

For all of you French students who wanna study in the US, my advice are:
-Show motivation curious
-Show the schools what you love and who you really are (show them you’re the one they need)

 • Write insightful and very personal essays about YOU and only YOU
 • Try to have a coach to help you correct your essays’ grammar.

By the way, the French Baccalaureate doesn’t really matter, just make sure you pass it with a mention in order not to be rescinded (I had mine with mention BIEN) :)

Bonne chance mes amis!
