Hi everyone:

I am in very tough situation, need to decide: I have an NY associates(2yrs) around 82 credits. I want to go to UT Austin McCombs for integrated BBA+ MPA

I have two options:

I know I have TOO MANY credits for McCombs: In 2011 I would be eligible for Fresh Start.

1) Should I go ahead with Fresh Start, clean slate and start from scratch, get only 30 credits from Austin Community College to transfer to UT. It will obviously delay my degree

This means I would need to take 4 pre requisite Math courses leading to Calc 1, get really high marks on placement test for English and Maht(I have not touched any subject in 9+yrs)

2) UTDallas has no problem accepting all my credits( I would get some credits(like Engl, Math, Foreign Language, Science etc) applicable to UTD accounting degree)?

My question is McCombs really worth it? Should I wipe the slate clean just to attend UT

or forget McCoombs and just get my undergraduate accounting AIM from UTD?

Take gmat then apply to MPA later

What would I miss on(in terms of network, job opportunities etc) if I attend UTD compared to UT?

Thank you

81 hours may be a lot, but see if you can still apply to McCombs. They will cut a few classes when they evaluate your transcript, but I don’t think they will cut past 60. If they cut too many hours or demand a fresh start to even consider you, I would go with UTD. Honestly, its just a bachelors. If you have your plans set on a masters or law school, you can always apply to UT for those.

go to UTD, if they have a MPA program do theirs. once you get the CPA you’ll be in good shape from either school

Don’t listen to Pierre, he doesn’t know what real campus recruiting is. I don’t blame him for it, he isn’t in any position to talk about it since he hasn’t experienced it first hand. Do your MPA program at UT Austin. Huge difference. The CPA won’t matter if employers aren’t lined up in front of you. In fact, I’m sure pierre goes to a no name college and is still in UG without any experience dealing with Big 4 recruiting. Take your advice from me, recent grad with CPA passed. Big 4 experience and now at Fortune 500.

yea go to UT, finish your BA at UT-D though.

If I were in your shoes I would go to UTD and finish my undergraduate degree and apply for the traditional MPA program at UT Austin.

The problem with waiting for a clean slate to do the integrated program is that you have to waste the time you would make up for doing the integrated program in waiting for your clean slate.

Then of course there’s the huge issue of even making it into McCombs. You have posted several threads about this and in each of them you act as though if you have a clean slate and take classes at ACC, you will be accepted into McCombs. The truth is there are hundreds of students every year who get rejected by McCombs and attend ACC and other colleges, even other colleges within UT, with the idea that they will be able to transfer into McCombs, and the majority of students with this plan will never make it into McCombs.

UTD is definitely no UT Austin, but it’s still an excellent university by normal standards. You should go there so you can get to work studying because you’re not getting any younger and because you keep overlooking the fact that counting on a transfer into McCombs is extremely risky because it is so competitive.

At UTD, you will still have plenty of job opportunities. I often agree with Dawgie, but he probably doesn’t realize how strong the Dallas economy is and that UTD is a good enough institution that students are recruited for good jobs. You can still apply for the MPA program at McCombs, but you are in a much safer situation if you don’t make it into McCombs because you will already be in a good university and you can always apply to other good MPA-equivalent programs at that point.

I never said UTD wasn’t good enough. There are plenty of lower ranked schools (UMass, Northeastern, Bentley) that still get heavily recruited in a geographic location. UT Austin not only gives you a better % of employment, but more flexibility in terms of position (Advisory), and geographic location. Everyone knows its possible to get it from a lower ranked school, I don’t know why anyone would encourage someone to aim for the lower ranked school because of a few examples of success.

yea always shoot for the better school, just have a backup plan.

yea you should just shoot for the MPA program at UT, you can possibly apply to Ut as an economics major and do the econ/mpa route.
