Also gained 25 lbs during my frosh year, but it was all “good” weight.

Basically, the OP just needs to balance out the calories he/she intakes w/ the physical activity he/she is doing or isn’t doing.

Besides some aerobic activity (if one is intent on still partaking in on the late night munchies and such), doing some resistance training will be helpful since muscle burns more calories than fat.

Well i suppose thats what they were talking about, i didnt read where they mentioned DDR i just assumed.

i’m only now attempting to start using the gym in my apartment complex. i like the preset programs (on like the stair master or the bike) that go up and down in intervals. like it has two bars of level 9 strength and hten two bars of a low strength, like 3. i try to keep the same pace in the level 9 areas as i do in the 3. it makes it bearable and still tough for a half hour.

Hey guys…slipped my mind to check this, but it looks like tons of great advice.

I have been swimming laps a lot…I definitely agree that you don’t get bored when you are swimming since you can focus on the “artistry” of your strokes. Also my pool blasts local radio stations which is kind of like an ipod, although not underwater ipods/earplugs!

I tried running…let’s just say that isn’t a good idea if you’ve never really worked out before. It is so painful and your whole body feels like crap afterwards! I definitely cannot run for 10 minutes so none of those endorphins kicking in for me!

Trying to eat healthier as well…going ok since there isn’t quite as many temptations at home as at college. Still working on not eating when I am bored or just watching TV…that’s the biggest struggle right now.

i gained around 12 pounds in my freshman year (this past year), actually more because i lost about 4 pounds in the past month and a half. i strongly recommend the Dorm Room Diet by Daphne Oz because she gives you a ton of useful information on staying HEALTHY as a way to lose weight, rather than actually dieting. oh yeah, and it didn’t hurt that i watched Supersize Me (the mcdonald’s movie) back in april and it grossed me out so much that i haven’t touched fast food since. :D

^ That would be a good idea if we can resist all the temptations we see while walking.

Another suggestion, if you do not do this already is to make sure you find something to do over the summer. When I say this, I do not mean leisure time, but something like summer classes or a job. Therefore you won’t get bored as much and get tempted to eat a lot. If you have a schedule of some sort, you can plan what you are eating for the day around that schedule the night before so you can notice how much you’re eating and be more likely to make healthy choices.

Yes. Except for that I’m not a freshman. I recently gained a few pounds because of eating too much junk food and being lazy. I don’t know if my idea is going to work, but it won’t hurt to try. I just need the motivation to go through with this. I guess the fact that summer is starting soon should be motivation even though my gain isn’t very noticeable and I can hide it with clothes. I don’t want to get to a point where I can’t lol. I think many of us are self-conscious about our bodies for that reason.

There is a lot of good and interesting advice in this thread. It is good to re-read again once in awhile.

You should try the over-achieving, easily-stressed, triple-major engineer’s -why the hell did I think this was a good idea- diet…which consists of coffee and caffeine pills.

I’ve lost 16 pounds in the past month, since going a little overboard this summer, without trying or even wanting to lose weight.

–
However, I second the swimming suggestions. I love swimming. I’m a fish, I could swim all day everyday (had I actually had the time.)
You should try doing that if you enjoy it.

My internship’s new office is located in some upscale apartment that has a pool, so I come in every day at 6am just to go swimming for an hour or two before work.

I’ve gained more weight my sophomore year than I did my freshman year. My freshman year I gained 2 pounds; so far my sophomore year (and finals haven’t even start), I’ve gained about 10 pounds.

Advice? Don’t eat processed food. That is pretty much all I eat, because real food is so expensive, and that is why I don’t fit into my jeans anymore.

Plattsburgh, I think most people react to schoolwork-related stress by eating more and exercising less (time issues), thus losing their fitness. I agree with many that it’s particularly hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle when you’re up in the wee hours of the morning and there’s no fresh food around. I’m pretty committed to being fit, so I actually manage to stay on-track for the most part except for finals week, when I have multiple papers due.

take the time to go to the gym! don’t say you don’t have enough time - you probably do, that time you spend procrastinating in front of the computer can easily be converted to a 1.5 hour workout 3-4 days a week. plus it takes off stress and makes you concentrate more to your studies (at least that was my personal experience).
trying to control what you eat is also crucial as going to the gym by itself is not enough. cut off the pizza, burgers, fries, brownies and all. eat light sandwiches, salad, grilled chicken, fish and stuff like that instead that’s rich in protein and fibres. if you’re gonna snack, choose low calorie bars and yoghurt instead of chocolates or chips.
these aren’t really radical changes - i’m sure anyone can incorporate these to their daily lives, and that’s how i got rid of my freshman 15+ in my sophomore year in around 3-4 months. i’m feeling much better now (though i’m worried i’ll gain some weight in the summer since i’m not going to a gym anymore)

Here is what i did.
I was a little overweight in 9th grade. So in the summer, i ran 2 miles everyday, ate 650 calories. Here is the kicker: i ate 7 vitamin gummy bears a day (the flintstone vitabears). OMG I dropped 15 pounds in 3 weeks. Best idea ever. Unfortunately, i gained like 8 pounds back. Gotta repeat :).

7 vitabears too. those are 5 calories per bear. So its 685. and Yes i burned off probably 350 calories running while metabolism takes care of the rest :).
