Freshman 2011 Class Schedule

So I'm trying to sign up for more classes during
Phase II. I was just wondering how many total units I should take with
a 2h/day job during the week (plus weekend hours).
I'm currently majoring in microbiology.

My ideal classes
Chem 1A/1L (4 units)
Math 16A (3 units)
College Writing R1A (6 units)

I am also interested in doing a research and be involved in few clubs if I can manage it.
I plan to attend dental school when I graduate so I want to make myself a competitive
candidate. I need suggestions on how many units I should take with all the other things that I plan to do.

you are there - 16 units sounds like plenty with the other objectives you have and the job.

I only see 13.

I have 13 units total so far. I was just wondering if I should sign up for more…

the college writing class is sometimes workload intensive, depending upon assignments and your current writing skills. Add a class that is relatively light work, or even a DeCal or seminar, to preserve time for the job and for the club and other social interactions you plan to pursue.

BTW - no idea how I saw 16 in your list. Must have been mixing it with another thread I was reading (or just messed up).

Is it recommended that I do a research freshman year? I don’t know if I should wait till I’m a sophomore or at least wait till spring 2011.

P.S. Thanks for the earlier replies ^_^!

13 units is recommended for your first semester, and it already sounds like you have a lot on your plate if you’re also working 2 hours a day and planning on joining clubs. You’ll have plenty of time to do research later, you don’t want to overwhelm yourself.

Then what’s the average number of units that people at berkeley take per semester?

At my CalSO (granted, I’m in L&S, if that helps at all) during the First-Year Experiences and the Counseling, all of the stories I heard had the recurring theme of: for the 1st semester at least, 13 or 14 is best, and 15 and up is kinda starting to push it.

That’s to ensure that you figure out how much of a courseload you can take so you don’t mess up your GPA from the beginning, and that you have enough time for getting to know new friends, new clubs, and to basically enjoy the beginning of your college experience!

13-14 units is fine for your first semester or two, but 15-16 units is probably average after that.

Thanks for the replies!!!

Berkeley recommends about 13 units for your first semester. For every semester thereafter, you should aim to take at least 15 units (for letters and science, that is. Other colleges have other unit recommendations).

12-15 is good for 1st semester freshmen, I heard. I’m currently taking 14.
