Hi there! I’m considering applying to NYU in the future and I checked their website about required high school classes and it said this:
We find students are best prepared for NYU if they’ve studied the following subjects:
English/Writing - 4 years
History/Social Studies - 3 to 4 years
Mathematics - 3 to 4 years
Laboratory Sciences - 3 to 4 years
Foreign Language - 3 to 4 years
Does this mean they are requirements or recommendations?
Thanks
@TheGr8Gatsby It says “best prepared for NYU” so most likely recommended, but I don’t think these recommendations are hard to complete at all. because don’t most high schools require you to take 4 years of english, social studies, math, and science at the least? at my school, it was required that we take a language for at least 2-3 years in high school, so that wasn’t difficult at all.
These are definitely not requirements. Lots of people haven’t taken these exact subjects, and I imagine it could even be advantageous to take subjects that show your individuality.
Out of the subjects you/NYU has listed, I’ve taken English for 4 years, social studies for 2 years, maths for 4 years, physics (not chem or bio) for 3 years, and foreign language for 1 year + 1 year of foreign language taught outside of my school, and I was accepted RD to NYU. (I also took music, comp sci, and art).
Thanks indiahyland and SpicyRamen. I know they are fairly easy to complete at a US high school but I’m from the UK and there we only take 3 or 4 A levels (classes during junior and senior year). This is great news and I will definitely be looking at NYU now. Thanks
If that’s how your school works then you’re 100% fine!! different schools have different policies on what classes to take and how many credits you need, so as long as you’re fulfilling your high school’s requirements you will be fine for NYU!
