Our plan is to just put money into his checking account when it gets low or he asks for some money. He had a part time job for the last year, plus grad money & birthday money (was the day before he left for school so no time to squander it.) He also is planning on work study which should come to about $800 per semester. He has no car, unlimited meal plan, he doesn’t ski and frankly, there isn’t much to spend money on in Lewiston, Maine. :)

Daughter does not have a car. She has full meal plan on campus. We pay books, give her $200 a month, with the caveat that that is it – if she spends it down before the month is out, she’s broke. If she has extra, she can put it into savings.

We cut off D1 from allowance when she turned 18 and don’t plan to give her any money during the school year. (we will put some money in her swipe card account to cover a load of laundry/week). We made it clear to her at the beginning of the year that now that she was 18, she was responsible for paying her own entertainment, including any clubs she signs up for at school. (she has full meal plan, lives in dorm, campus has great bus system and student fees include quite a bit of entertainment, including football tickets [she informed me a meal swipe is worth $10 of food at a football game]).

She got a great afterschool babysitting job in the spring that resulted in 25 hours/week during the summer and lasted until a week before she went to college. She also deposited one of her local scholarships in her savings account and earmarked that for books.

That said, I did stock her up on what should be a semester’s worth of toiletries & cleaning supplies, as I assume I can buy stuff cheaper at Target, et al, than she can find on campus.
