freshman at harvard...ask anything you want to know

Yeah, I'm very curious about that. What are the opportunities for one to host a radio show on WHRB? I've always had this idea that wherever I go to school I'd love to host my own radio show!

so ill go by order...

laid back people: tons... i mean there is such a great diversity of people you will always find someone that shares your tastes, outlooks on life etc...i personally thought that i would find only stuck up rich kids who only got in because of legacies, but seriously there are AMAZING interesting funny chill people at harvard. i think the people are actually harvard's greatest asset.

social life- it is true, harvard social life is what you make of it. if you want to get drunk/high every night you will definitely be able to. and if you dont, well that what you make of it as well. although a lot of the social life is sometimes centered around final clubs, it is really up to you. i for one have had amazing weekends partying with friends without needing to go to many final clubs.

Parties- again, parties are not only centered around final clubs...you can pretty much find a party every day of the week if you look hard enough.

Chinese language dep- from what ive heard from a few friends taking Chinese, it is a very intense and hard course (they are all getting C's) but very gratifying. interpret that as you will

5.house system- dunno, im a freshman :)

cambridge/boston- boston is probably the best college town out there, but the thing is that many harvard students do not go beyond their harvard/cambridge bubble and dont venture out to explore this great city. this might be due to the fact that you basically have everything you need right on harvard square (CVS, nice restaurants, etc)..well everything except macdonalds. haha

classes- from what ive experienced, classes are what you make of them. if you plan on sleeping your way through classes and still getting a good grade, forget it. in order to get good grades, you have to work at it. at least that is my experience... classes are AMAZING: very interesting and engaging and very fulfilling, the professors i got this past semester were simply brilliant. but to get good grades, you have to work hard for them (at least for most classes)

Porcellian- from what ive heard, it is VERY expensive (like $10,000 a year or something)...but that is it. i dont know too much about it.

harry potter- HELLLOOOO i only came to harvard because Annenberg (the freshmen dining hall) looks like hogwarts! hahah

again, radio station, never heard about it....although one of my roommates was comping to be a DJ somewhere for some harvard organization.... hmmm

keep askingg!

hasty pudding- my boyfriend's roommate and one of my roommates are in it and to me it seems it is just like a final club in many respects (you get punched, you pay a ridiculous amount of money to be part of it)

hehe I like how few people seem to know of this radio station. Less competition for a spot on the air :p

And less people to hear you blather on about Michael Viscardi! ;)

just kiddin' :)

hahaha I wouldn't say a word about Michael on the air, I promise. Well, at least not until senior year when he wins the Nobel Prize ;) It's only been a few weeks since Siemens so I'm still in that state of awe of his existence...lol.

All people would hear is some very, very beautiful and eclectic music, the majority of which they would never hear elsewhere :)

So why do drunk students pee on John Harvard's statue? =)

Any other cool stuff about Harvard you guys can tell? Like the craziest things u ever did?

I thought even the sober students did it, haha.

Oooo. Like what kind of music?

what about Spanish Rock? Como Shakira?

Cool, man. :)

Pfft, no tengo Shakira. Siempre he sido muy suspicioso de musica tan populara, entonces no he experimentado con Shakira. Pero algun dia, quizas ;) hehe ahora estoy divirtiendo mi musica arabe.

Should I stop talking in my mediocre Spanish now? :p I'm listening to this classic Egyptian song right now called "Enta Omri". It's actually as instrumental version of the song performed by my grandfather, one of Israel's more prominent violinists. It's so gorgeous!! It's this old song originally performed by an Egyptian singer named Umm Kulthoum. The studio recording was a mere 40 minutes long but the song could easily last hours live because Middle Eastern concerts are *crazy/i! The crowd would go crazy and dance and the band would feed off their energy and just improvise endlessly. My grandfather, who's originally Egyptian, actually brought this song back in vogue in Israel about 20 years ago. It's now a staple of just about any major singer's set. haha I could go on forever about this stuff :D Oh, and I was about to go on forever about it in Spanish, too, until I realized what the hell I was doing :p

This is the most enthusiastic I've ever seen you, Guitar. I can only imagine what you're like when you're doing research. :D

Do you listen to Amir Diab? I'm not sure how popular he is. Actually, I don't know much about him period. As I click submit I'm thinking 'why don't you simply check his audioscrobbler account?' silly me.

haha I'm sorry, I have to be enthusiastic when that kind of music is playing in the background. Clich

Tony--No, I don't, although maybe I'll check him out? I will if you recommend him :) I'm ashamed to say my knowledge of Middle Eastern music isn't that great. There are a handful of Israeli/Arabic artists I'm very familiar with, and then more from what I always hear being played around the house and with the family in Israel.

No, it's OK, I like that you're so into this. lol

haha it's OK. Just don't bring the topic of discussion to astrophysics and I think we're alright ;)

Get on the T redline inbound and go just one stop, before you get to MIT even, and get off. There is a MacDonalds right there on Mass. Ave.

Yeah but the point is that that's not in Harvard Square.

Border Cafe (Mexican food) is quick and cheap if you want something roughly equivalent to fast food without all that fat.
