Hey guys, I just entered the university of Miami as a freshman this fall, and since I was in your exact shoes a little less than a year ago, I'd be more than happy to answer any questions or share any experiences.

I was hoping to attend the University of Miami next year, but I’m worried about the social scene there. Is it hard to find people who aren’t interested in going to clubs? I definitely don’t mind a party or two, but I absolutely hate clubbing. Does the nightlife revolve around clubs?

To answer slamhamster, I can tell you that my son is a recent UM grad. Loved it there. Did well. Great school. Yes, you can have a great time and not go to bars/clubs. Son rarely did. The campus is in Coral Gables, an upscale suburb of Miami. Plenty to do nearby and a short distance away. I would recommend joining a fraternity/sorority there as that gives you a very good social outlet.

Slamhaster- sorry for the late reply, but I was very worried about that aspect as well before I entered the university but it is honestly just like any other university- it depends who you surround yourself with. Without a doubt you will find tons of students who are deeply involved in clubs and sports and other activities. The social life is not at all revolved around clubbing, yes there are those few that go every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday but I can assure you they are the 5% minority of the university.

The parties and night clubs will always be there when you want them, but it’s rare for students to go out all the time. The first 3 weeks of school I went out every Thursday Friday and Saturday but last weekend I didn’t go out at all because I wanted to study and a lot of my friends here stayed in for the same reasons. Yes we party but there are priorities and the students definitely know that academics are the priorities.

I sort of mis-interpreted “clubs” as organizations but as I stated later on, no doubt there are always people on campus on a friday or saturday night having the time of their lives and there are also those who go out to clubs. Which ever path you choose, you will without a doubt have a blast. Once you find your group of friends and who you get along with, there’s not even a concern for what others do.
