Apparently it's a good idea to know what classes I want to take before I go to Orientation. Unforuntately, I have no clue which classes I should sign up for. Anyone have any tips or advice for which classes to sign up for? My major is EE btw.

math 31a or 31b or 32a depending on your ap credits
english comp 3 (unless you had ap) or physics 1a/1b otherwise
ee seminar
chem 20a

Oh, so we're not going to get any information about classes BEFORE Orientation? Because I'm still confused about the whole process, like how many classes we should take, what kind we need, etc...

most EE I know get chem out of the way asap. Also english if u don't have it already.

Lovelyday: Most freshman take 12-15 units (3-4 classes). Go thttp://www.registrar.ucla.edu/schedule/schedulehome.aspx

for a feel of what was offered last fall (may not be the same for F07 but its a general idea)

and no, you get no guidance whatsoever before orientation.

yah, that's what orientation is FOR, but then the people who come prepared are less stressed during orientation.
a strange set-up if you ask me, but whatever...

what i did (psych major) was just to look through the course catalog (online version will do fine) at the major requirements. or in my case, pre-requirements. i took three classes: 2 of them were psych pre-reqs, and one was a GE cluster.

before you go to orientation, the class times/schedules/locations will be posted. go onto your my.ucla and use the "class planner" function (interactive class planning grid).
come up with a few possibilities, make sure your finals don't overlap, see how full the classes already are from the sophomores-seniors who already signed up.
then your orientation counselor will be able to make suggestions, instead of helping you start from scratch!

My recommendation:

CS 31

English Composition 3

Math 31A/B/32A

Try to get these classes. Alternates:
- EE 3
- Physics 1A
- GE

http://www.seasoasa.ucla.edu/Announce.pdf
Curriculum Charts --> Electrical Engineering Curriculum
of course it doesn't give you any info on GEs but at least it's a starting point.

What about a science [biochem/biology/chemistry] major?

Math 31A, Chem 20 AH, GE cluster 80, HC course 18 [Socrates] or 14 [French culture] ...?
assuming ap credit for english comp

if scerri's teaching 20a, take him.

i think everyone should at least meet him. he's a huge character

Do this if you feel disciplined enough. I don't think the workload is too bad, but you won't be playing everyday like some freshman during the first quarter.

don't count on getting an HC course your first quarter. they fill up really quickly, and not all of them are offered every quarter.
i'd say go with the first three. that'll keep ya plenty busy ;)

If AP scores don't come out until mid/late July, and you go to one of the earlier Orientation sessions in early/mid July, how do you sign up for classes? Do you sign up for classes assuming you did well on APs? Can you change later if you find out you didn't?

Classes with no/bad AP scores:
1st Qtr: Chem & Biochem 20A; English Comp 3; Math 31A

Classes with good AP English, Chem and CalcBC scores:
1st Qtr: Chem 20B/20L, GE, Math 32A

Try here: http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/GE/ go to your college. You may also want to find the department site for your major since they'll obviously have their own reqs. I suggest printing out the like 7 pages of possible GE classes you can take for your school, and see if any can be applied toward your major. I know there is some limit to how many units can be used for both GE and major but I forget the number. But def. know before hand, I know what I want to take it's a matter of making sure I get into those classes ^__^

Last year, AP scores were available through myUCLA before the first orientation, so you don't need to order early reporting or anything

Should be on MyUCLA during last week of June.

True, you can get it at orientation but I'm super crazy and like, I'll cry if I A- don't finish my undergrad in 3 years or B- can't take the classes I want. I'm a nerd, I can't help it. Please, I think it's fun looking at all the classes and stuff and my mom and I get really excited and sit there... Good times.

Okay ........

why do you WANT to finish undergrad in 3 years?
i can understand not wanting to take more than four... but... hey pace yourself! enjoy UCLA!!!! :)

what is a seminar exactly? And I remember hearing that one of the math and one of the CS classes were weeders. Which one are they again? Also, do we just sign up for first quarter classes at orientation or can we do later quarters too?

seminars are basically long, once-weekly discussion sections. at least, that's what the GE seminars are like.
at orientation, you just sign up for your first quarter's classes. you will sign up for winter quarter classes during fall quarter, and spring during winter.
