How quickly do classes get filled up for freshmen during the signup week? If I make a tentative schedule now of the classes I'd ideally want, would I have a good chance of getting these classes during registration? I am in the 2nd out of 3 groups to signup based on my ID number, I think.

You might be closed out of some classes. It’s possible. It’s always possible. If you already have access to Caesar, you can already see how many upperclassmen have signed up for a particular course you may be interested in and can see how many open spaces there still are.

Yeah, there are around 30 spots for a gen ed I want and 50 for a CS class. My other two classes aren’t an issue since I’m in MMSS. Will I be able to get both of those or should I look for some backups?

You’ll probably get in but I would still have a backup list of a few additional class possibilities ready to go. I remember my S having a hard time finding a 4th open class when registering during freshman week.

Have back-ups for all your classes just in case. Even if there are 30 spots open for a particular class, if you don’t have the first time slot for registering, you never know what will happen and you don’t want to be stuck frantically searching Caesar and the CTEC’s looking for other classes while hundreds of other freshmen continue to register.

One piece of advice my S (incoming senior at NU) always gives to freshmen at NU: don’t overreach on your fall quarter classes; do NOT take the highest level of class you are entitled to. Until you settle into your new home and the high academic pace at NU, it’s best not to take a super-challenging class.

My son was very glad he started with a calculus class he was entitled to skip due to his AP score, and took an easy level of foreign language. This gave him two easy As and freed up time to focus on other classes. He is still on track to graduate in four years with a double major and a very easy senior year, with just 2 AP credits. In contrast, he had several freshmen friends who got Cs or Ds in high-level classes (or dropped them) their first quarter and regretted taking the highest-level classes.

Uhm, wait, what? we can register for classes?
