So I'm gunna be going to ERC majoring in Chem*, and I would like to go into premed. I used the four year planner and here's what I came up with for my first term:

*I'm thinking about applying for the exceptional admission for Biology Major the end of freshman year and majoring in Biology: Physiology

Math 20B (Got a 5 on the AP Calc AB exam) - hopefully with Yuan Zhang (Is she the best option?)
MMW11 - Herbst - I heard he's the best :D - SOOO NOT EXCITED ABOUT THIS CLASS!
TDGE11 - GE Requirement
Chem6A (Got a 4 on the AP Chem) - Should I try for Chem6AH? - Crowell

I think that'll be a pretty good first term schedule :) but I'm a little afraid that if I want to go into premed, those classes won't be enough :( I don't want to take classes that make it seem like I'm not trying/caring, so any suggestions? :)

I'm already planning on doing some volunteering and internship at hospitals for sophomore year.

Any comments/suggestions would be great!! :)

Those classes sound fine. I mean, most students going to med school from UCSD are pretty much going to be taking the same classes. I think what will set you apart are the things like internships and research and stuff like that. As far as CHEM 6AH goes, the general consensus is that it’s a tough class for people who are REALLY interested in chemistry and it’s overly necessary. Needless to say you certainly can take take it if you really want.

There’s a grad student student from UCSD who posts on here named astrina. She’s at Columbia studying medicine (I think, right?). If I flash up the bat signal hopefully she’ll come in here and give you better advice than me about med school because I’m not going to med school although I’m a biology major. OoPurestOo is another one who’s a med school hopeful that can probably give you some good advice too.

Looks like I’ll work on my internships and other stuff early

Few more questions though,
I was comparing the four year plan thing for Chemistry major and Physiology major and I noticed some differences…

The recommended courses for first year in Physiology:
Math10A/B and Math11 - But I’m already planning on taking Math 20B for chem - so what does that mean for me?
BILD courses - Should I take that along with chem? or should I wait to take that the second year?

im a current ERC incoming freshman too!
To answer your question, someone on CC advised that the only BILD course you can take with Chem 6A is BILD 3 [?] or Evolutionary Biology. Now, what i personally am planning and hoping to do is take Bio courses Winter quarter of Freshman year.

The 20 series also counts for biology majors so you’ll be fine with those classes if you switch. And you can take the BILD classes either your first or second year but since they are prereqs to a lot of upper div biol classes, taking them earlier than later isn’t a bad idea.

well as for your professors, i personally am going for crowell and herbst
i was thinking about sailor for Chem, but decided against it, partly because of how late the final is [7 -10 at night, plus im commuting but that’s just me]

herbst is really good i hear, but like all these great classes it might be difficult to get in. if you dont get into his class there are two other teachers:
Jordan, David K. and duBois, Page Ann

i actually posted a question about these two teachers and here is what i was told:

my goal is to get herbst, and then if not i will be glad to take it with Jordan, he seems pretty cool.

im taking 20C so i have no idea who Yuan is :P

P.s. When is your sign up time? [kinda curious]

Thank you for your answer!
Looks like I’m set for my professors, I’m just really hoping that I get Herbst cuz I’m not a big history person and hopefully he’ll make it better

And I’m an international student (not sure if that makes a difference for the class signup time) but I can start enrolling at 9:40 am on September 1st :D

im 8:40 AM on the 31st of Aug.
a bit nervous though. still am not 100 % sure about my classes, well im commuting from north county to UCSD and the math class im thinking about starts at 8:00 which means i have to leave early or get stuck in rush hour traffic ugh…

Remember that if you want to apply for exceptional admission into Biology, you need to complete all the lower divs. Unless you already have bio or physics ap credit, it might be a good idea to start those series if you’re trying to transfer to a biology major ASAP.

[Exceptional Admission Information](http://biology.ucsd.edu/undergrad/exadmit.html)
They also hold exceptional admission info sessions the first few weeks, but all the info is pretty much on that site. I’m trying to apply for physiology too in winter quarter so I can be just in time for my double major petition I wish the best of luck to the both of us!

@spatel23
I wonder why there’s a difference for the sign up time?
I certainly hope there are spots left for the professors I want by the time I enroll
But good luck with the commuting! I’m sure you’ll be fine :)

@momosky
Can you explain what the lower divisions are? I took AP Bio and got a 4, but never took Physics in high school. Should I be taking the physics series freshman year along with chemistry?
And good luck to your double major petition! :)

^The lower division classes need for biology majors are the following.

BILD 1, 2, 3 (which you completed with your AP score)
CHEM 6A, 6B, 6C, 7L
PHYS 1A+1AL, 1B+1BL, 1C+1CL (or the 2 series if you so choose)
MATH 10A, 10B, 10C or 11+11L

So to answer your question, taking physics as soon as possible would be a good idea. I would recommend it for your first quarter if it fits.
