Freshman commons questions

As I'm getting ready for August 22, I'm wondering how I should kit out my dorm room. The only room I've seen is the tiny sample one - two lofted beds over desks pushed against the window wall, small open closets in corners, and small dressers.

What size rug should I get?
Is there room for a beanbag chair in a Commons dorm?
Are all freshman dorms about the same size/ lofted bed situation?
What size poster fits well over the dresser?

I'd really appreciate somebody answering this! =)

an area rug is really nice, especially when u just come out of the shower and are getting dressed in the morning, not all rooms are the same size (corners are drastically bigger, middle of hall is somewhat bigger) It really doesnt matter tho, all are nice and u don’t really have control over it, I had neither of the bigger rooms and it was still awesome. Yes a beanbag chair can fit, let me know if you have any other questions, I will be there helping you guys move in, so we will have some fun.

my D’s room was in one of the old dorms that is now part of the commons (yes, there are some older dorms) and it was tiny and would not have fit a bean bag chair. In fact the tv had to be hung on a wall as there was not even a spot for that. you should probably wait to see your room and then buy something like a chair at a local store, if you do have the space.

thank you!

tin to a parent is much different than tiny to a college student, there are no tiny dorm rooms on the commons

Is there any way to orchestrate the furniture placement such that I sleep lower down? I’d much prefer sleeping arrangements where I’m not on a top bunk…

and if not, how low are the ceilings? If I sit up will I bonk my head?

@ moodrets: i’ve heard some people unloft their beds. i don’t know if this is only possible in the rooms that are a bit bigger though.

the room i went in had really high ceilings…plenty of room to sit up and now worry about your head

the beds can be lofted at different levels. most of the girls seemed to lower them to one of the lower rungs. still with room under for the dressers and storage bins to fit (and in my d’s case, her little fridge and microwave–) but not so high that you feel like you’re hitting your head on the ceiling. The new commons buildings do have high ceilings, but my d’s room in an older building had lower ceilings. I’m not saying to hall wasn’t nice, it is, and it is fully renovated but her room was pretty tiny (and thats not just a parents perspective! I’m just trying to be honest, since i know everyone expects to get a new dorm…i know we did!) The rooms had great closets though, which definitely helped. corner closets, almost like little walk ins, with tons of room for hanging and some shelving.

Can anyone help with suggestions about how to manage a small flat-screen (22-26inch) TV in the Commons or other dorms…are there ways to mount/hang without killing the walls?

Yes, there are TINY rooms in the commons. My daughter had one last year, and I second Bridie–there was no room for a beanbag or anything else additional than what came in the room, even with the beds lofted.

I mean, go ahead and look at the square footage numbers in the housing assignment guide and I am sure you will find that the doubles in the commons are all bigger than any other doubles on campus.

We toured the Commons yesterday during a PreVU. No one could tell us how many rooms were on each floor but they all said 3 bathrooms per floor (each with 2 sinks, 2 stalls, 2 showers). Why did they build new buildings and include such a small number of bathrooms? Most colleges are going the other way.

on my floor, which was in Sutherland(a new building) there were 4 bathrooms on each floor, and that is how all of Sutherland was, I can’t speak for the exact number of bathrooms in the other buildings, but I know that finding an open bathroom was never an issue.

Are there communal kitchens in the commons? What sort of equipment is available in them?

Mounting a TV is pretty much a no. You risk tearing up the wall, and you’ll be charged for it at the end of the year. Your best bet is lofting the bed, and placing the TV on a stand underneath it. This works out great if the other bed is also lofted and you place chairs, or a futon under it.

My freshman year in Curry hall, we only had 1 bathroom. I’m sorry you guys only get 4 haha.
