Freshman - confused

A couple of questions have been bothering me recently, which none of my peers have been able to answer. I'm sure an advisor could answer them but I figured coming here was quicker.
Firstly, can courses in your major go towards breadth requirements in L&S? Somebody has claimed this is not possible...
Secondly, what's the deal with courses that are cross-listed in L&S? Usually the L&S listing seems to have much shorter wait lists; is there any disadvantage in enrolling in the L&S listing as opposed to the actual one?
Thanks!

Also, if I’m enrolled in a class that has a wait list but switch sections, am I put on the end of the wait list? How does that work?

A course in your major certainly count towards breadth requirement in L&S. Whoever claimed it doesn’t is wrong.

For the cross-listed course, there is no disadvantage for whatever section you sign up for. To get into the class, you should certainly sign for the section that has the shortest wait-list. However, if you would like your transcript to appear as Astro C12 instead of EPS C12 or L&S C70T for whatever reason, then you have to sign up for Astro C12.

And finally, you are put on the end of the waitlist if you decide to switch sections. It can get more complicated depending what situation you are in right now, but to make your life easier, I’m sure no one will care which section you attend unless they are very specific about section attendance and such.
