Freshman Connection

So as the letters from other schools come in, all negative as of now, I'm left assuming UMaryland is where I'll attend. Only I was admitted spring '09 after applying to the Smith School of Business..guess I over assumed here as well. So anyway, seems like Maryland is where I'll go and I'll also do the freshman connection program...anyone else going to do this?

your not alone

When you got your UMD letters that said you were wait listed for Fall 2009 but accepted for spring 2010 and it offered you the Freshman Connection program did it also mention that on the UMD web site where you can check your admissions decisions

My daughter is considering. We live in Los Angeles. Have you researched where you will live. That is her concern? Not many kids from around here go to UM. Have you found a place to meet others? Look for roommates? She needs help. If oyu here of a facebook page, please advise.

search Maryland 2013 on facebook; there's one group for definitely going and one for maybes...and start a Freshman connection roomate thread if it isn't there already. I was told by a current student that there are plenty of apartments within walking distance and it won't be hard to sublet for a semester.

there is a topic called freshman connection in the discussion board:)
hope it helps!

If you were accepted for the Spring does that mean you're waitlisted for the Fall?

(In response to BuddyBob)

khshockey

Did your letter say that you were waitlisted? My daughter received spring admission and the letter also said that she was on the waiting list for fall. It seems that applicants were either rejected, accepted for fall, accepted for spring, or accepted for spring but put on the wait list for fall.

Would those who are waitlised or rejected mind sharing your stats - SAT, GPA, etc.?

I would really like to do the freshman connection program, but my mom is dead-set against me living off campus as a freshmen, even for just one semester. University towers is only a mile from campus and they have a shuttle bus, and I would room with two other kids from my school who got the same decision. We'll see, but if it was up to me I would be attending FC no question.

Yes i also got the spring 2010 decision, no waitlist for the fall
my sat: 690 Math 550 Reading 530 writing
I am def considering the freshman connection if I dont get into UVA (legacy)

accepted spring 2010 gpa-3.8 sat: math- 630 CR-500

hah khs are SATs are both 1130 but our math and cr is flip-flopped mine 630 cr 500m
i say we do a tradeoff for a 1260 and then maybe well be allowed in for the fall! ;-)

haha yeah sounds good to me. My mom is also dead set against me living off campus. I applied architecture and it didn't say if i got my major or not but im leaning towards going to penn state upark now (im instate). Are you going to start late or do FC?

One of my good friends wants to go to a community college and transfer in the spring, but I would much rather do Freshman connection. If I can convince my mom to let me live off-campus, I`ll enroll in fc. I guess you're waiting til spring?

My D heard online yesterday. Freshman Connection = Hello Nittany Lions!!
She was liking both schools and PSU was her preference, the Spring admission just made the decision easier.

Congrats to your daughter. I think I'm going to Penn State isntead of doing freshman connection. I want to major in architecture and it would be easier for me to do that at maryland then penn state. However, architects I talk to all tell me to do civil engineering and go to grad school for architecture so I'm thinking about doing that. Maryland is a great school but so is Penn State.

To billmayo and Hockey,

We are from Southern ca. My daughter got into both Penn St. and UMD/frosh connection.

I was wondering as east coasters, if oyu could offer your perspectives to the relative merits of each school and why you prefer Penn St. Doesn't UMD have a better reputation? Please I would appreciate oyur thoughts and anyone elses. We do not have a lot of people to turn to for an opinion. Neither school is all that popular out our way. I grew up in the east, and encouraged my d to look at east coast options. She has narowwed it down to UMD, Penn St. and UT Austin>

Socaldad,

Both schools are excellent choices. I think the better rep is basically they are a few clicks higher on the US News poll. It could depend on the major as well as each school has nationally renowned programs. UMD I think has an advantage of being in an urban area with easy access to Wash DC. PSU is a city to itself in central Pa with a huge alumni base. It comes down to personal choice. My D loved PSU at first sight. She felt it was the quintessential college that she had in mind. She also liked UMD but wasn't as attracted to the campus. Visiting each campus is still a good thing to help with the decision, but obviously that could be a problem coming in from Ca. When it came down to it: PSU in the fall (they want me) vs. UMD in the Spring (they almost want me)..PSU wins. UMD should just build some additional housing and lose this spring admission farce. Good Luck to you both!!

Congrats KHShockey.....coming back to UMD for grad school , you'll have the best of both worlds.
