I think I just learned that there was a freshman convocation and my son did not make it to it.Anyone know what this was and what they were trying to accomplish with it?

Go here [New Student Programs :: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign](http://www.odos.uiuc.edu/newstudent/first_year/welcomeweek.asp) to get a description of the daily events for incoming students. None are actually required. Helpful and just fun for meeting people to hit what you can including for info you might want. Convocation is basically a mass meet in the Assembly hall where there are a lot of profs and deans who attend and a little picnic outside. As far as actually providing useful information it is probably one of the events on the low end of the scale.

Thanks for the info, drusba. I think son was going to the gym with his new roommates at that time so I guess he was on the right track in acquainting himself with new people.
